If you’re going to PAX this weekend, get ready to willingly part with your cash when you pass by the LittleBigPlanet 2 booth, because you won’t be able to resist buying one of their adorable little soft Sackboys and Sackgirls! And I’m not talking about cheap knockoffs either –these are officially licensed PlayStation products.
The dolls are manufactured by toy company Senario and come in two sizes: 6″ and 10″. The larger ones weren’t available on Friday (September 3, 2010), but a Senario rep assured me that they’ll be there on Saturday and Sunday. The small dolls are $10 while the large dolls are $20. They only take cash so stop by an ATM before heading over to the LittleBigPlanet 2 booth.
The Sackboy/Sackgirl dolls are soft, but not floppy like Beanie Babies. Their bodies and limbs are quite firm, so they can stand upright if you lean them against a wall. They don’t have jointed limbs so they aren’t really poseable, but they can still easily sit down. The dolls come in different colors and materials just like in LittleBigPlanet. I can’t comment on the appearance of the larger dolls because they weren’t available when I was at the booth.
At PAX, Senario is selling the Series 1 set which is currently available for purchase online at certain locations. However, they are also selling dolls from the not-yet-released Series 2. See the pic below for what they look like. Since these are somewhat exclusive to PAX, the Series 2 dolls are selling for $20. The large dolls are also not available online yet either, and are scheduled to come out sometime in October.
I asked the Senario rep about future dolls, and yes he confirmed that there will be a Series 3. These include a biker Sackboy, a cowboy Sackboy, and even a Setbot –the Sackboys with cube-shaped heads from LittleBigPlanet 2. Series 3 has an approximate November 2010 release date, and you can buy them online and at GameStop.
I also asked the Senario rep if there are any plans for a super special collector’s edition of LittleBigPlanet 2 with a Sackboy doll, but he said no since it would have been up to Sony. I’m surprised that Sony hadn’t considered such a partnership, because I’m sure a lot of folks would be more than happy to pay an extra $10-15 to get the doll with the game.
Before you even ask…OF COURSE I bought a Sackboy! In fact, I purchased “Chop Chop”, the Japanese-costumed Sackboy. I was told that he’s quite rare and in fact I had bought the last one…and it was only around 10:30 am at the time!
Much to my surprise, I found out later that my husband (who tagged along for PAX this year) bought me two more.
Here they all are, one LittleBigHappy family!

How cute! I'd have gotten the school girl Sackgirl.
I was tempted to get her too, but at $20 I decided against it. Good thing I didn't because then I'd have 4 sackboy/sackgirl dolls to pack in my suitcase!
