NFL superstar, Super Bowl MVP and Madden NFL 11 cover boy Drew Brees posted these words to his Twitter account shortly after learning he had won fan voting to appear on the cover. This is the first time EA has let fans vote for the cover athlete.
Athletes appearing on the cover of the popular football game have met with unfortunate circumstances at an alarming rate. In 2009, EA Sports picked two athletes to appear on the cover for the first time. Larry Fitzgerald stayed healthy but co-cover athlete Troy Polamalu was injured in the first game of the season. Polamalu missed all but five games due to knee injuries.
Brees doesn’t just have the Madden Curse hanging over him, but the checkered history of Super Bowl winners. Injuries, players leaving through free agency and other mishaps often chip away at defending champions. Also, a Super Bowl team often has a number of players contributing way more than initially expected. That was the case with the Saints, one of the biggest “feel good” sports stories of 2009.
Gamertell will keep an eye on Brees as he tries to defy one of sports’ most persistent jinxes. Perhaps a little New Orleans-style voodoo is just what it takes to kick this curse.
