Intellivision Lives DS Thunder CastleIf you want to play over 60 classic Intellivision games on your DS, don’t go to GameStop. The store will turn you away at the door. The creators reported on both the Intellivision Facebook page and website that GameStop decided the DS version of Intellivision Lives! wasn’t for them. GameStop acknowledged that older gamers (over 30) may want it, but younger gamers probably wouldn’t so they don’t want it in the store. I guess they’re afraid having it on the shelf will taint surrounding games.

Now, let’s take a look at who will be selling the Intellivision Lives! DS compilation. Both Amazon and Buy.com have product listings for the games, but don’t provide a release date or list Virtual Play as the publisher. Amazon doesn’t even list a price. Buy.com does, but $10.99 doesn’t sound right somehow, considering this is a brand new game. But still, the fact that both sites have product listings is promising. Intellivision Lives! comes out September 16, 2010, and the developers have said they’ll let people know which stores will carry it closer to the launch date. I bet the store at the Intellivision Lives! website will definitely carry it.

Funny, because GameStop never seems to have had a problem carrying retro game collections before. They sold the PS2 and GameCube versions of Intellivision Lives!. And they carry Retro Atari Classics and Namco Museum for the DS. If you look at the PSP game shelfs, you’ll see EA Replay, Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded, Capcom Classics Collection Remixed, Atari Classics Evolved, Sega Genesis Collection, Namco Museum and maybe even Activision Hits Remixed. I wonder how many GameStop customers under 20 have bought copies of those games.

Update: Joystiq states that GameStop representatives have confirmed that Intellivision Lives! DS will be available through GameStop.com, though there is no product listing for it at the present time.
