Square Enix is working on more than just Final Fantasy XIII: Agito and The 3rd Birthday for the PSP. The newest issue of the Japanese manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump has revealed that a Dissidia: Final Fantasy sequel is in development. The follow-up will be called Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy and it will debut in Japan sometime in 2011.
Information on Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy is slim, at the moment, but two of the new playable characters have been revealed. Lightning will appear, representing FFXIII, and Kain will appear representing FFIV. However, the Weekly Shonen Jump article didn’t mention if Kain will be on the side of Chaos or Cosmos. Lightning will obviously one of the good guys on Cosmos’ side. The rest of the character roster has yet to be revealed, and the article doesn’t state if any of the original Dissidia characters will be returning for the sequel.
The current buzz on Japanese forums and message boards is that Dissidia Duodecim could be one of the two surprise games Square Enix is planning to unveil at the 2010 Tokyo Game Show. Square Enix hasn’t made any announcements to confirm or deny that yet, but we’ll all know for sure next week since TGS 2010 starts September 16, 2010.
While it’s still far to early to hear about a worldwide Dissidia Duodecim release, I think it’s a given. The original Dissidia was released worldwide and was very well received. I hope Square Enix includes more Final Fantasy heroines this time around. It seemed a shame that only Terra (FFVI) appeared in the original Dissidia. Maybe this time Yuna (FFX), Faris (FFV) or Ashe (FFXII) will join the cast.
