Apple Gamer Center As promised, Apple has release iOS 4.1 today (September 8, 2010) for select iPhone and iPod Touch devices. Among the new features is the Game Center application. Game Center works as Apple’s version of Xbox Live or PSN with achievements, leaderboards and friend lists.

To update your device to 4.1, connect it to your computer and open iTunes. You should get a prompt automatically to download an update. If not, got to your iPhone or iPod Touch from the left panel in iTunes and click on the check for updates button. Mostly everyone should have the update by now but if you don’t, be patient. It took a while for the update to get to me. Game Center will be downloaded and installed with the update.

The biggest problem with Game Center is that there aren’t very many games that currently support it. Not even Angry Birds, which was demonstrated by Steve Jobs to show off Game Center, hasn’t been updated with Game Center support. Games will be trickling out over time with Game Center support, but pickings are slim right now. If you own Flight Control or Ms. Pac-Man, you’ll find them to be Game Center enabled.

We’ll have a short video demonstrating the basic features of Game Center coming up shortly. For now start filling up your friends list and get ready for an all new mobile gaming experience.
