Console wars are going to come to life on the PS3 next year. NIS America is going to be bringing Super Dimension Neptune to North America as Hyperdimension Neptunia in Spring, 2011. Time to see lots of adorable, often scantily-clad girls attack gigantic monsters.
Think of Hyperdimension Neptunia as a game about console-tans – anthropomorphic personifications of video game consoles and companies. For example, White Heart of Ruii represents the Wii and Gust represents, well, the Gust Corporation. Neptunia herself is supposed to be representative of the either the Sega Saturn or the unreleased Sega Neptune. I know, I wish she’d been a Dreamcast console-tan too.
The lands of Gamindustri is under siege, and the only way they can be saved are if the console goddesses take part in a game war against the invading monsters to save them. Neptunia, the amnesiac guardian of Planetune, steps up to rally the guardians of Ruii, Raystation and Leanbox and save Histoire. Supplemental DLC released later in Japan even made Gust and Nippon (support character representing Gust and NIS) playable characters.
In Japan, Idea Factory’s Compile Heart developed Neptunia and Sega published it. Which explains why the Sega console character is the star. It also explains all the classic Sega Genesis and Sega Master System game character cameos. Neptunia and her friends can call on them in attacks.
