PS3 colors Sony has squeezed out another PS3 firmware update this evening. Firmware version 3.55 is now available for your downloading pleasure. This update contains a security patch and presumably nothing more. You’ll get the download prompt the next time you turn on your internet connected PS3.

Sony rarely goes into detail regarding its security patches. My guess is that this new update once again negates the effects the of PS Jailbreak software. In mid-November, PS Jailbreak was updated to be compatible with firmware 3.50. There hasn’t been a PS3 firmware update since then. Also, the PS3 was recently hacked using the X3 Max PS3 dongle. This new exploit enables a user to jailbreak the PS3 without downgrading its firmware.

It’s reasonable to believe Sony has blocked access to these hacks. I fear Sony and hackers will be engaged in a constant cat and mouse game that will result in constant updates for honest PS3 owners. It’s just a matter of time before the PS3 is hacked again and we’ll get another late night firmware update to patch the vulnerability. The worst case scenario has Sony going so far as to lock everyone out of existing features. I don’t want there to come a time where we have to use Sony approved software to transfer photos, music and videos to the PS3.

  1. Wow, are you really complaining about taking five minutes to update your ps3?! Why not touch on the fact that the ps3 no longer does what it was originally advertised to do? I do not condone or support the people out there who are pirating games, but I will never say this is anyone's fault but sony's. They should have never taken features away that made the ps3 such a great buy! Do you see microsoft freaking out about all the hacked 360s? NO! And that is because they understand that it will happen, and just ban the idiots that use the hacked 360s on their networks as they rightfully should. I fully support the ps3 hackers and their quest to bring back the gaming machine they actually bought.

  2. Fun to see how the writer of the article expresses his fear for the cat and mouse game between hackers and Soy, while the ad below the article is about PS3 jailbreak dongles.

  3. I just hope that these frequent firmware updates don't kill that USB cheat device that's in development and will work like a gameshark/codebreaker for PS3 games. :P
