A lot of major services have an app these days. Not having an app that users can download to access their account is pretty much silly. Microsoft has gone beyond a simple app by bringing Xbox Live to Windows Phone 7 devices, but Sony doesn’t have such a service on such a large scale (yet). For now, a simple app for iOS and Android devices will have to do.
The upcoming PlayStation application will be released in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and The Netherlands soon. Notice how North America isn’t on that list. My heart weeps for my continent. The app will allow you to check out your PSN trophy collection and keep tabs on your friends. Any iPhone or iPod Touch with iOS 4.0 installed will be compatible, as well as Android devices running Android 1.6 or higher. Best of all, it’s all free.
The app is also a marketing tool. Sure you can peek at your trophies on the go, but you can also read posts on the European PlayStation Blog and keep up with information on games for the PS2, PS3 and PSP. You can then share that information with your buddies on Facebook, Twitter or through e-mail.
Let’s just hope the app doesn’t have to go through the arduous trophy syncing process we’ve gotten so accustomed to.
