Now that Nintendo has finally announced a release date and price for the 3DS in North America, we can begin fantasizing about running out and buying one. While Nintendo of America had the attention of New York City, Nintendo’s European wing was playing to the crowd in Amsterdam. For the most part, Nintendo announced the same thing for both regions. There were of course some differences including price, the release date and 3D video content.
The 3DS will launch in Europe two days before North America on March 25, 2011. Nintendo is leaving the pricing up to retailers. The British retailer HMV stated on Twitter the 3DS would cost £229, or $366. While we certainly feel lucky to not have to pay as much as Europe, there is one thing we wish we had – support for television-based 3D video content.
The 3DS will be getting 3D video support from Sky 3D, Eurosport and Aardman. This will presumably work either through the 3DS’ Wi-Fi connection, or perhaps with a separate app that will be downloaded later. Eurosport will be on-board for at least two years, Aardman will make 3D episodes of Shaun the Sheep and Sky 3D will specialize in short-form content and video clips in 3D.
The 3DS in North America will eventually get 3D movies from studios such as Disney, DreamWorks and Warner Bros, but I would like to see it go further than that. I understand some North American networks probably aren’t ready to start broadcasting in 3D seeing as HD broadcasting hasn’t been going on for too long, but they will start sooner rather than later. When they do, it behooves Nintendo to capitalize on securing deals that will give the public one more reason to buy a 3DS.
