Spyro is making a comeback. The once iconic mascot during the PSone era will be revived by Activision later this year in Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure. Activision is expected to reveal the game today (February 11, 2011) at the New York Toy Fair. Skylanders: Spryo’s Adventure was the new product Activision teased during its last earnings call that it said would blend games and toys together.
Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure isn’t just a videogame. It will release alongside 31 action figures and trading cards. The game also brings augmented reality into the living room. The game will come with a stand or “portal” that the action figures will sit on. The likeness of the toys are then transported into the game. Each character has their own special powers which will no doubt encourage kids to beg their parents for more toys. Activision is targeting children from ages 6-12 with Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure.
The toys also double as proprietary storage devices. The upgrades and abilities a character receives through leveling up are saved to the toy. This allows kids to take their toys to a friend’s house, and show off what they’ve accomplished.
A starter pack will be sold for $70. It will include the game, three toys, the portal and trading cards. A price for the individual toys hasn’t been announced.
Expect to see Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure on consoles, PC and handhelds this fall.
