In case you missed Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing when it was on the DS, PS3, Wii, Windows PC and Xbox 360, you’ve got another chance. Sumo Digital and Sega are working on a version that will be compatible with all iOS devices. No matter how hard or far you run, it looks like Sonic will catch up to you and challenge you to a race.
As you can see from the screenshot above, the iOS version of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing looks quite similar to the Wii version, graphically. Players choose an iconic Sega character, like Sonic and his friends, Ryo from Shenmue or Ulala from Space Channel 5 and then race around tracks inspired by classic games. You can play alone or with friends who also happen to have the game over both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Though initial reports haven’t announced anything yet, I’m guessing there’ll be Game Center support, and maybe even achievements.
This also isn’t the first mobile version of Sega & Sonic All-Stars Racing. Sega allowed Gameloft to handle the cell phone and smartphone port of the game. Expect this iOS port to turn out far better than that one. At the very least, the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad versions will be much more detailed and feature touch screen controls.
There’s no word on price yet, or a firm release date. Since iOS announcements usually only come a few months before the app is released, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing before April, 2011.
