Electronic Arts is very pleased with the performance of Battlefield 3. Today, the publisher announced Battlefield 3 has sold five million units around the world. This number is based on EA’s “internal estimates”, so BF3 may have sold more or less than that. EA’s estimates have also led the company to believe BF3 is now the fastest selling game in the company’s history.
Here are some more numbers for you. Since launch, BF3 players have revived 48 million teammates, blew up 67 million vehicles and committed 73 million savior kills. EA also pointed out the servers handling the multiplayer portion of the game were working fine 98.9 percent of the time over the weekend. Multiplayer was clearly the main focus of Battlefield 3 and gamers were getting restless from not being able to connect and stay connected to matches shortly after the game’s launch.
EA also positioned BF3 as the game that takes down Call of Duty. Although five million copies sold within a week is astounding, Activision estimated Black Ops sold 5.6 million copies on its first day.
This goes to show the main focus for the Battlefield franchise shouldn’t be to destroy Call of Duty. That’s just not possible. EA should just focus on what makes BF3 great – multiplayer. The rest will fall into place.
