There’s some good news on the internet today for people who always wanted to try that Star Trek MMO, but didn’t actually want to pay to play it. Star Trek Online is now free. Of course, there is still a cash shop and people can pay $14.99 to become a Gold Member and have access to every single aspect and area of the game, but that’s not what we’re concerned about. We want to know what we can have and enjoy without paying a thing.

To be honest, the subscription doesn’t have that big an edge over the free-to-play option, which is nice. It shows Cryptic Studios is trying to be fair. It set up a Features Matrix so you know exactly what you’re missing if you’re not paying to play Star Trek Online every month. As long as you’re okay with some guild and energy credit limits, fewer bridge officer slots, one less character slot and smaller inventories, you should be fine. Most of the other perks Gold Member subscribers get are available to Silver free members if they’re willing to purchase them from the cash shop, so everyone has an opportunity to enjoy every aspect of the game.

Star Trek Online is about experiencing life as a Federation Captain or Klingon Warlord. You manage your own ship and explore the galaxy, encountering new races and taking on assorted missions. It contains locations, species and references to Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Actually, it’s set in 2409, right around the time when the events of TNG, DS9 and Voyager were taking place. You get to take part in space battles and battles on planets, plus you can customize your character and your ships.

So, who’s in? I’m planning on downloading Star Trek Online this weekend, now that it isn’t going to cost me something.
