Blizzard Entertainment announced a large number of layoffs earlier today. The company will let go approximately 600 people around the world. Blizzard says 90% of the laid off individuals won’t come from the game development side of its business.
The layoffs also won’t affect the ongoing development process of Blizzards games such as Diablo III and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria. In fact, Blizzard tries to lessen concerns (of investors most likely) by pointing out it’s hiring game developers.
“Over the last several years, we’ve grown our organization tremendously and made large investments in our infrastructure in order to better serve our global community,” said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime in a press release. “However, as Blizzard and the industry have evolved we’ve also had to make some difficult decisions in order to address the changing needs of our company.”
The layoffs also won’t change Activision Blizzard’s previously announced financial outlook.
