Electronic Arts kicked off the month by releasing The Simpsons: Tapped Out in the Apple App Store. This free-to-play title is powered by Origin and involves the player helping Homer rebuild Springfield after he causes a nuclear explosion. He was too busy playing another free-to-play game and ignored all the warning signs at the nuclear power plant. The trademark Simpsons humor is starting to come out already.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out is well aware of its microtransaction-based trappings. Homer makes remarks about how Lisa takes a whole hour to shop at the Kwik-E-Mart, and how easy it is to level up (at first anyway). This game requires you to use donuts to speed up tasks and purchase certain items. You can earn a small amount of donuts in the game (by logging into Origin for example), or you can just buy them with real money. You can spend up to $100 at a time on donuts.

You’ll learn that things don’t move along quite as fast after the tutorial is complete without donuts. You may have a dozen donuts or so to spare, but most tasks that last an hour or more require two donuts in order to complete them instantly.

Make no mistake, you’ll be playing the waiting game a lot if you don’t want to spend money. That’s just how these free-to-play mobile games are.
