Sonic the Hedgehog fan boys have had a lot to look forward to lately. Sonic Generations was pretty awesome and even Mario & Sonic at the 2012 London Olympics was pretty good. Plus, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 will grace multiple platforms later in 2012. With all that goodness, there’s bound to be some unexpected sadness. And here it is – Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 will probably be the last Sonic the Hedgehog 4 episode. Personally, I think making a two episode episodic game defeats the point, but whatever.
Digital Spy got to talk to Sonic Team’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 Takashi Iizuka, the game’s producer, and he said he thinks that’s it. Sonic Team and Sega aren’t preparing a third episode right now and Iizuka says there are no plans to start developing one. That means Sonic’s new adventures will end with him and Tails facing off against Metal Sonic. Let’s hope there’s no cliffhanger ending.
Now it’s speculation time! Why do you think Sonic Team and Sega are willing to stop after only two games? My guess is that the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 games aren’t as successful as everyone hoped, not garnering that much hype or love for the money and effort. My second guess is that Sonic Team has already accomplished all it wanted to with Episode 1 and 2 and doesn’t need a third or fourth entry. I’ll admit, I was hoping for a third game that brought Knuckles back.
At least you can take solace in knowing Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 will appear on practically every non-Nintendo platform ever later this year.
