XSEED’s been really busy lately! It’s bringing Ys to PCs through Steam, threw a Corpse Party gave Vita owners Sumioni and decided 3DS and PSP owners needed some Unchained Blades. All that would have been enough to buy our love for at least a few more years, but now it’s also decided to pick up Way of the Samurai 4 for the PS3. We don’t know when, but eventually we’ll get to be samurais in 19th century Japan.

The Way of the Samurai series are sandbox games that do offer a main “storyline” and series of quests, but also let you run around doing pretty much whatever you’d like. Sure, you can join one of three factions to either support or oppose the recent influx of foreigners after the shogunate decided to start allowing people into the country. You don’t have to do that though, and can instead run errands, explore or take on odd jobs. It’s all about keeping yourself happy and busy while exploring Amihama.

While it may seem open-ended, Way of the Samurai 4 actually encourages you to complete the main quest and replay. That’s because you accumulate karma each time you play, meaning different events and side quests may unlock on future playthroughs due to your actions in the current one.

There’s one downside to all this – Way of the Samurai 4 will only be available as a download. Which means you’ll have to clear some space off of your hard drive and deal with some pretty substantial download times. On the plus side, it will make distribution a lot easier and you won’t have to worry about it being hard to find.

Not gonna lie, I’m disappointed. When I saw XSEED’s first teasing tweet yesterday, I hoped it meant Akiba’s Trip was going to be localized. Maybe next time it will pick that PSP game up.
