LEGO announces new MMOG

LEGO has announced that a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) featuring the LEGO brand is being produced by NetDevil. According to the press release, the game, titled LEGO Universe, will be available Q4 2008 and include:

…character advancement, expansive social and community features, and will provide a child-safe alternative to other MMOGs on the market. As a player, you’ll be able to customize your mini-figs and interact in the universe as any character you choose, providing unique opportunities for players to expand and explore with their creations.

If the latest LEGO Star Wars game is any indication, I suspect the game will include a fair amount of tradable items to re-head your character. I’d love to be able to purchase individual blocks and even build houses and vehicles. If they incorporate all the LEGO products and kits released over the years, you could have dinosaurs, cowboys and Darth Maul kickin’ it on the same green-pegged lawn, all while being filmed.

In any case, this looks be a great way to introduce kids to MMOs… heck, I wanna give it a try, too.
