It’s nearly impossible to make a list of games to suggest to everyone for specific gift-giving holidays. When I write a holiday guide for my newspaper column, I instead suggest a few games and suggest the type of person each game (or console) will best appeal to. Top Ten lists for holidays rarely work well for everyone and, when blindly followed, leave many gift recipients under-joyed.
With silly illustrations, Yahoo! has broken down the Fatherly types into some common categories, picking one or two games each type of dad might enjoy for Father’s Day 2007.
For the full list of suggestions, check out Yahoo!. Otherwise, here’s a quick rundown and the low/highlights.
Sports Dad:Madden NFL 2007 (quelle surprise there) and Fight Night Round 3 (not a bad suggestion)
Mechanic Dad:Forza Motorsport 2 and Motorstorm (I guess they meant auto mechanic)
Gardening Dad:Viva Pinata (I’d add Pikmin 2 to that as well, though I’m not sure most dads will appreciate either game)
History Dad:Civilization 4 and Medieval II: Total War (there are many, many others)
Military Dad:Rainbow 6 and Ghost Recon Warfighter 2 (and so, so very many other war games to choose from.. which means you could easily combine this and History Dad).
Golf Dad:Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007 (apparently a different guy than Sports Dad. Again, another huge non-surprise).
Handy Dad: The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions. (I guess if you need to keep that category separated from Mechanic Dad, that’d be one of the few games to do it with).
Stay At Home Dad:Diner Dash and Carrie the Caregiver. (Really? REALLY!?)
For the most part, the suggested games are the popular, standard choices for the genre. I find it surprising that the writer doesn’t think any fathers will enjoy a single role-playing, online, slashing or platform game. Also notice that the last two are games available on Yahoo!’s site (nevermind that at least one – Diner Dash – is now a PSP game as well). Also, where’s the Sci Fi Dad? I know a lot of older fathers who play nothing but sim games.
The Yahoo! list is an OK attempt but seems to miss some of the really big categories and falls back on a few somewhat insulting stereotypes.
