Gamertell Belated father's Day Gift Ideas

If you have not bought your father a thoughtful gift for Father’s Day 2007 yet, it’s too damn late. The day is over.

It’s never too late, however, to load up dad with gift cards he can redeem at his leisure. So on your way to his house to help pretend to grill a few thick steaks for him as an apology, pick up a gift card or two from your local electronics stores (Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, Wal-Mart or whatever local store sells game stuff).

If, of course, you want to really suck up with your belated Father’s Day gift, read on (if you are a dad and not certain what to get, you might as well read on as well).

A game system. if you have the scratch to spare, pick one, any one will do. Keep this in mind: The older the dad, the more confusing and foreign the WiiMote might be. If they will likely only play games once in a while, go with the Wii since it is sturdy and the least expensive system. If they are a tech junkie and have multimedia files on their Windows media PC, either the PS3 or Xbox 360 will do (but skip the Xbox 360 Elite). Remember that the Xbox 360 also has a great online service but is prone to hardware faults, requiring more repairs. The PS3 is a lot more study but a lot more expensive.

If he already has his own game system, so much the better. Chances are, if dad’s older than 50 and has not picked up a joystick since, well, there were joysticks, you might want to stick with the classics when thinking of games. Of course, my dad is more than 60 and loves the Nintendo DS Brain Age and Big Bain Academy: Wii Degree. Otherwise, you might want to check out yesterday’s post about Yahoo!’s Father’s Day game list.

Game Download Gift Cards. It’s possible to purchase gift cards in most game stores for all three systems so yer ol’ man can download and play whatever the heck he wants. Of the three main consoles, Nintendo’s Virtual Console games tops the list. With more than 100 old system games to choose from, dad can certainly find something he liked playing 10-20 years ago. Of course, he’ll need a Wii to play them on, an internet connection and some Wii Points to download games. Don’t pick games for him – let him choose. If he gets really flustered, go suggest the oldies but goodies like Super Mario Bros. Xbox Live and Playstation Store both also have some oldies (and a few new games are free), but the Wii games are extra groovy when you include an old school controller (you should get one of those, too).

X-Arcade’s Tankstick. This will put the joystick back in his hand and let you play along side with him as well. This big daddy joystick looks like it was plucked right from an old arcade system, complete with tons of authentic buttons, two joysticks and a trackball. Plug it into your PC (Windows and Mac), plop in one of the three game discs provided and you’ll be in arcade heaven for weeks.
