Now in its second competitive season, The World Series of Video Games held an event in Louisville, KY, from June 21 through June 24, 2007. A total of $90,000 in prize money was handed out to the top finishers this past weekend.
Louisville’s event featured players competing in Counter-Strike, World of Warcraft,Warcraft 3, Guitar Hero II, Quake 4 and Fight Night Round 3.
The World Series events take place around the world, starting this year in China. Other events are scheduled to be held in Dallas, Los Angeles and Europe, with the finals being held in Sweden. Beside the games listed above, additional games that will included in competitive play include Call of Duty 2 and Gears of War. The final tournaments will be worth a grand total of $175,000, with $45,000 to be handed out to the first place winner in a World of Warcraft PvP competition. It’s not a pot worthy of the World Series of Poker but it’s nothing to sneeze at, either.
Registration for the events are open to the public. Last year’s event had 90,000 attendees.
CBS will air footage of the Louisville competition on July 29, 2007, as part of the Sweden finals coverage on CBS’s Sports Spectacular show. The finals will also air Sunday, August 19, 2007, Saturday, November 17, 2007 and Saturday, December 15, 2007.
