Motion capture company, PhaseSpace, has signed on to allow developers using the Unreal Engine 3 videogame engine to directly direct in-game characters using its motion capture tech (how redundant was all that?).
Actors and game directors can see the full character moving within the game in real time instead of a standalone, wireframe character on a blank background. This will save developers weeks of post-capture cleanup and help to create more realistic movements (we hope). It will also help game companies develop games more quickly as well as save a small fortune, which we also hope is passed on to gamers. I suspect it also means a whole new group of mimes will come out of the invisible woodwork to meet the demand for body actors.
The press release also claims that the PhaseSpace Recap Editor is “software that can be used by anyone with only an hour’s training” and PhaseSpace Impulse system will make “any artist can be a Mocap expert.” Sweet sign me up. Zombie and Brainzoo are already using the PhaseSpace mocap system.
this is all being done through Epic games’ Integrated Partners Program (IPP), which is a nice way of saying all thes ecompanies are buddies and give each other deep discounts, tech support, co-marketing and many, many hugs.
