EA announced it is celebrating the 2007 Rugby World Cup with the release of the world’s first ever officially licensed game of the event, EA Sports Rugby 08. The Everone-rated title will launch July 17th, 2007 for the PS2, and features player of the year Richie McCaw, captain of New Zealand All Blacks on the cover. The game features 20 national teams, expanded gameplay mechanics including a new kicking meter and a new dynasty-esque mode called World Cup Challenge wherein Rugby fans can recreate and replay some of the biggest matches in the sport’s history.
The EA Rugby series has been rated decently since it’s 2001 inception, and this title looks to be new and improved in all the right ways. It certainly gives hope for other overlooked team sports (Lacrosse or Ultimate Frisbee, anyone?) that rugby is getting the full treatment on the little system that’s still going strong.
