Today’s dominant Kickstarter campaign in the gaming space belongs to the Oculus Rift. Oculus Rift is a virtual reality helmet that has gotten the praise from huge names in the gaming industry such as John Carmack, Gabe Newell and Cliff Bleszinski. Oculus Rift is designed to be affordable enough for regular consumers who want to feel immersed in a game like never before. Viewing games with the Oculus Rift is supposed to encompass your view on all sides as opposed to simply putting a screen directly in front of you. The diagonal field of view is 180 degrees and includes head tracking with very little latency.
Oculus was looking for $250,000 to produce development kits, but it $627,000 has already been pledged. The Kickstarter has one month to go, so I’m sure the number of pledges will drastically increase by then.
Developers who pledge only $300 will get an early version of the Oculus Rift along with Doom 3 BFG Edition. If the development community gets behind this, Oculus will be begin production on consumer versions.
