E3 has always been a place of surprises, revelations and announcements. In following with that tradition, Konami revealed a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots scheduled to be released March 2008 for the Playstation 3.
In the last installment of the series, Konami goes back to the roots of the game by placing you in the shoes of the Solid Snake from the first Metal Gear Solid. This time, Snake is old and suffering from the disease mentioned throughout the history of the series – resulting in a 42 year old Snake that looks 62 and has just 6 months to live. Returning characters include: Meryl Silverburgh, Raiden, Otacon, the infamous Vampire and more. These characters wouldn’t be the same if the original voice actors weren’t included, which Konami wisely decided to do. So the voice of Solid Snake will remain David Hayter.
Set in a war-torn 2014, the restriction on military intervention on foreign soil has eased and mercenaries are in greater demand then ever. This demand has formed Private Military Companies (PMC’s), although it not long until it’s discovered that most of the PMC’s are under the control of one organization – Outer Heaven – the mercenary company under Big Boss’ control in the very first Metal Gear. Outer Heaven is under Liquid Ocelot’s control now, he’s amassing an army capable of rivaling even America’s forces and planning a violent insurrection. In response to this, Solid Snake is employed by Roy Campbell to stop Outer Heaven and put an end to Liquid Ocelot for good. Snake isn’t alone though, Meryl is in command of a newly formed FOXHOUND, and her team is brought in as back-up.
Like the game itself, the development also had its twists and turns. Originally, Hideo Kojima, the director of the entire series, announced he would be retiring his position and leave it open for someone else to take up. As a joke, Konami announced the new director as “Alan Smithee“, but it was quickly discovered that Shuyo Murata, co-writer for MSG3, was the real, new director. Yet, the joke backfired, and Konami released a humorous trailer in which Hideo Kojima admitted that he would still be co-directing MSG4. The trailer was released due to an overwhelming amount of negative fan feedback – including death threats. Talk about a backfire alright.
Get ready for this last installment, cause if the trailer is any indication, Konami is pulling out all the stops.
