NCSoft showed off Tabula Rasa, Richard Garriott’s (of Ultima fame) sci-fi MMORPG today (July 12, 2007) at E3. The title features a mixture of FPS style controls and typical MMORPG gameplay with an emphasis on storytelling and atmosphere. The game is slated for release on October 15, 2007, on the PC.

The new trailer featured a look at some of the unique play mechanics and showed an example of the moral choices that will pop up as part of the storytelling throughout the game. So far, it’s shaping up to be a very interesting hybrid, adding a nice action-y feel to the depth of the MMO formula. In fact, the game encourages a faster pace by rewarding ballsy players with an experience point-multiplier for killing multiple enemies manic FPS style.

MMORPG players might not like the streamlined interface – there are only two onscreen icons at any given time (one for the currently selected weapon, and one for your currently selected skill), but that only serves to facilitate the simplified, action-oriented gameplay. Whether it truly evolves the genre remains to be seen, but Tabula Rasa will certainly be something different when it hits stores.
