Yesterday at E3 (July 11, 2007), Konami announced Silent Hill 5 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, set for release in 2008. The new title marks the survival-horror series’ first outing on the next-gen consoles and Konami promises “haunting visuals, a psychologically intense storyline, and an evolved combat system.”

The game’s storyline centers on Alex Shepherd, a war veteran returning home to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his brother. Of course, his travels lead him to the nightmarish town of Silent Hill and to encounters with its creepy residents. The combat system has been revamped for this next-gen incarnation, allowing the player to execute various offensive and defensive maneuvers. The rest of the available details seem to denote more of the same Silent Hill staples – puzzle solving, an atmospheric soundtrack, and disturbing visuals.

Silent Hill has always been the scariest series on consoles – Resident Evil’s baddies have nothing on the demonic freaks populating the SH world, and this title looks like it’ll uphold the tradition quite nicely. The revamped combat is a welcome addition, and the graphics from the trailer were deliciously moody enough to make me want to forgive the lackluster SH movie and jump back in.
