Sony has made lots of Vita announcements at GamesCom 2012, and it’s time for one more! It turns out the company is starting a Cross Buy promotion. People who buy certain PS3 games, which appear on both the PS3 and Vita, will get download of the Vita version for free. Right now, people are guaranteed free Vita games when they buy PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault or Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

It’s a nice money-saving tactic. All three of those games will cost $39.99 on the Vita and $59.99 on the PS3. People willing to shell out for the console version get the handheld incarnation for free. It makes sense for two reasons. One is that PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale has cross-play compatibility. That means PS3 owners can fight against Vita owners and vice versa. The other is that all three games have shared game saves. A PS3 save for Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will work with the PS3 and Vita versions of the game.

Let’s hope this deal expands to all multiplatform games. It seems like something that will really work well. I mean, I got Sound Shapes because the Vita version came free with the PS3 version. Now I use the PS3 version for playing and browsing community levels, while I use the Vita version for making my own levels in the level editor. It was a win-win deal!

We still have to wait a while for all three games. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be out on November 20, 2012. Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault is expected to be out before 2012 ends. Meanwhile, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time has slipped into 2013.
