PopCap logoLeading casual games developer and publisher PopCap Games recently announced the acquisition of Retro64 and SpinTop Games. With the addition of these two companies, the already ubiquitous PopCap has essentially expanded its digital domain into something of a casual games empire.

Retro64 has been known for it’s retro-styled action and puzzle titles and will continue to function as a developer for PopCap. In fact, the former Retro64 office has been converted to a satellite development studio, and it’s still headed by (Retro64 founder and chief producer) Mike Boeh.

SpinTop Games adds it’s own library of casual games, as well as its Vancouver development studio to PopCap’s camp. Co-founders Craig Hamilton and Duncan Magee will stay on as managers.

This only proves the viability of the new market and, it’s safe to say, PopCap has been on quite a roll lately. The online-only company has been taking advantage of the wide-open casual games market and putting out content that’s simple but addictive (including Bejeweled and Feeding Frenzy) since 2000, long before Nintendo made the soccer mom demographic all buzz-worthy.
