PS3 Slim

The latest PS3 firmware is now available to download. This update will officially change the name your PSN account to a SEN (Sony Entertainment Network) account. We detailed this recently and no other changes have be made to accounts. Firmware update 4.10 also brings some improvements to the PS3′s web browser. Unfortunately, this update has more »

Grab your 3DS and download the December 2011 firmware update!

Hey everybody, it’s 3DS update time! At first, we thought we wouldn’t see this update until December 8, 2011. That’s when Nintendo said it should be up. It must have been finished early, because you can now connect your system to the internet and acquire all kinds of handy, new features immediately!

Here’s how you update. Go to System Settings from the main menu…

Kindle Fire update makes things run a bit smoother

The Kindle Fire is immensely popular. We’d love to go into details about how many people bought a Kindle Fire, but Amazon is always so secretive about actual sales figures. For now, I think it’s safe to say over a million people purchased Amazon’s tablet. The reviews have been mostly positive considering the Kindle Fire is a $200 device, but issues such as lag still came up frequently. Don’t worry, Amazon has an update available right now for the Kindle Fire that may fix those pesky issues.

No 3DS firmware update until December 8

You remember that super awesome 3DS firmware update Nintendo promised we’d get before November 2011 ended? We aren’t getting it. At least, we aren’t getting it in November. Of course, given that it’s November 29, 2011 and there’s only one day left in the month, I’m pretty sure you all figured that out on your own. Nintendo knows it’s messed up though and has set a new release date for the 3DS firmware update. Get ready to download it on December 8, 2011. For real this time!

Nintendo didn’t offer specific details as to why the November 3DS firmware update wasn’t ready…

Super Mario 3D Land cartridge updates friends lists, stops piracy

I guess Mario really is pretty darn super. It turns out the cartridge for his latest game does quite a bit for the 3DS. That’s because early reports from Japan, where the game has a November 3, 2011 release date, says a firmware update is included on the cart. If you pop it into your 3DS, you have to go through with its update to actually play the game. Which could be a good or bad thing, depending on whether people are moral and upstanding or low down, dirty pirates.

See, Super Mario 3D Land‘s firmware 2.2.0-4 does more than just make the 3DS a little better. It makes it stronger…

3DS getting demos, paid DLC and an online eShop

There’s a slew of news for 3DS owners fresh out of Japan. See, the 3DS firmware updates are never just for show or meaningless, like they are for some systems. Each one actually adds new features. The next update is scheduled for November and it turns out some highly anticipated features may start showing up. Satoru Iwata spoke at a financial results meeting and mentioned a number of the things that will be included either with the new firmware or another update coming shortly.

The biggest news has to do with DLC, which will definitely be enabled with November’s 3DS firmware update…

3DS getting Hulu Plus, 3D video recording and new videos, apps and games

Well, Nintendo’s latest 3DS conference in Japan has passed and the result was an avalanche of new information about the handheld. Most of the news was related to videos, such as the Hulu Plus and 3D video recording announcements, but there were also quite a few downloadable game updates to sort through as well. I’m sure 3D recording is the main draw though.

The November 3DS firmware update will be one worth downloading…

New, free StreetPass game included in next 3DS firmware update

When it comes to the 3DS and its firmware, Nintendo isn’t following the path of Sony and its PSP or PS3 and issuing near constant updates. Instead, it’s following more along the schedule it set with the Wii. The updates are pretty infrequent, and only come if there’s an actual problem that needs addressing or if the company wants to add new features and applications. It’s good to know. It also means we’ll probably have something good to look forward to now that Nintendo says a November update is fast approaching.

On October 21, 2011, Nintendo will be holding another 3DS conference in Japan…

PS3 firmware 3.72 announced, no new features added (update)

It’s that time again, the time all PS3 owners love. Prepare not to immediately be able to sign in and play online, because it’s new firmware time! Sony has just announced PS3 firmware 3.72, which means sometime very soon, you’ll have to waste time downloading and installing an update with pretty much no value to you, just because Sony says so.

And before you start defending Sony, saying that there’s probably a really good reason for firmware 3.72, the PlayStation Blog pretty much backs up my assertion that this is another pointless update.

3DS getting a major firmware update and two Mario games for Christmas

Today is pretty much 3DS day, what with Nintendo kicking things off with that 3DS conference in Japan. Yes, it’s time for information overload with tons of games to lure people into considering the handheld system they were ready to write off. While most of the conference announcement pertained to Japanese games and release dates, Nintendo of America has some good news for North America, in the form of a firmware update that will actually add features and definite release dates for our first two 3DS Mario games.

First, the firmware update since it’ll add a function that’s actually pretty cool…
