Pro basketball players are looking for other means of income during the NBA lockout. Several are making deals to play overseas. Utah Jazz forward Gordon Hayward is going pro in a different game, StarCraft II Hayward has joined the IGN Pro League and will play in the IPL Origins event in Atlantic City Oct. 6-9. He will also serve as a spokesperson for the event. Hayward’s already paying dividends in that department. CBS Sports and Yahoo are among the news outlets that have picked up the story.
Eight-year-old gamer shakes up Marvel vs. Capcom 3 scene
A legend was born at the EVO 2011 fighting game tournament. Eight-year old Noah Solis made the Top 48 with Marvel vs. Capcom 3 , schooling many adult players in the process and quickly becoming a fan favorite. Those watching cheered his every combo and booed the winning players when he met defeat. It was a Catch-22 for his opponents. They’d be subject to ridicule if they lost to him but hated if they defeated him.
Pro gaming sponsorship group The Traveling Circus knew a very good thing when they saw it. They’ve signed the young man to a sponsorship that will cover his tournament entries and give him his own clothing line.
Gamers documentary about MMOs now free to watch online
One of the more recent films to be named Gamers is a 62-minute-long documentary by Ben Gonyo currently available to watch for free at SnagFilms’ web site. While it seems to focus primarily on World of Warcraft it includes interviews with gamers, a few developers, designers and even a sociologist.
Gamertell Preview: WCG Ultimate Gamer Season 2, Episode 3
AJ received a double dose of heartbreak last week on World Cyber Games Ultimate Gamer. He got sent home and is out of the running for the $100,000 prize. Also, he’s no longer able to kick back in the cushy Ultimate Gamer pad and hang out with Faye. It was a hard fall from grace, considering he placed first in the “real life” challenge.
Kat and Ryan formed an unlikely alliance. It could be short-lived as…
Gamertell Preview: WCG Ultimate Gamer returns to SyFy tonight (August 19, 2010)
TV has been doing shows about competitive gaming since capitalized on the arcade craze of the ’80s. The latest TV show to try and capture the competitive fire of high level video gaming is World Cyber Games: Ultimate Gamer on Syfy. Alternate Disc-Tractions: Gamer on Blu-ray (with digital copy)
Gamer isn’t quite what you’d expect from the title. Sure, it has a fair share of gaming cliches but it tempers them with just the right mix of seriousness and humor and then wraps it all in an interestingly gritty cinematic style.
Don’t be mistaken. Little about this movie is subtle.
Gamertell Preview: WCG Ultimate Gamer on SciFi Channel
The SciFi Channel is adding another show to its lineup in an attempt to capitalize on the popularity both of reality TV and video games. The result is WCG Ultimate Gamer which has a dozen gamers – male and female – living together and competing in a series of real-world challenges and scored video games for money, pride and a world-hopping competitive gaming gig. The first episode will air 10:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, 2009, and the entire series will consist of eight 1-hour episodes.
The show offers a fair amount of gamer pride, a little dress up (at least at the beginning) and plenty of hoke you’d expect from a reality series…
