Xbox Live Update for the week of September 4 through 10, 2011

It’s another big week with four titles in the Xbox Live Arcade. Crimson Alliance is an action-RPG that sees you fighting the Cult of the Soul Siren. You can choose from the wizard Direwolf, mercenary Gnox, or the assassin, Moonshade. Crimson Alliance supports Xbox Live co-op for up to four players. The download is free. Watch the move, though. One character is 800 Microsoft Points, all three are 1200 MP. If you download the free version, you get a “trial character” and numerous prompts to buy a real character. Thank the “freemium” gaming model for this price structure. It has already been the source of a fair amount of confusion.

Leedmees is this week’s Kinect arcade addition. It’s billed as a “full body puzzle action” game. The “Leedmees” are puzzle creatures that need your careful guidance to move them, not unlike the Lemmings or mini-Marios from the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games. Now you get to lead by moving your body. There is multiplayer of course, because part of the fun of motion control is having your friends either watching or jumping around with you. Leedmees is 800 MP.

BloodRayne: Betrayal is a 2D sidescrolling adventure with the sexy dhampir star of games and B-movies. It has an emphasis on combos and old-school, die repeatedly until you learn the attack patterns gameplay. So far, it’s earning better reviews than her 3D exploits, or needless to say, her movies.BloodRayne:Betrayal is 1200 MP.

SkyDrift takes players into the world of skyracing, which combines both speed and combat. You can upgrade planes with items to make them faster, more destructive, or just prettier. Sometimes you have to devastate them by looking good, folks. Flying higher is a safer path, but slows you down. Drifting at lower altitudes allows you to move faster, but the course is more difficult. You will also be more vulnerable to attacks from your enemies. Soar with the flyboys for 1200 MP.

The Deal of the Week is on Battlefield: Bad Company 2 DLC. Add-ons including Onslaught Mode, Bad Company Vietnam and the Kit Shortcut Bundle Pack are 50 percent off.

In Games on Demand, you can be a samurai, or one of fiction’s greatest detectives. Way of the Samurai 3 and Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper are both available for $19.99.

iPad gaming update for July 31, 2011

The iPad gaming update is Gamertell’s weekly look at the previous week’s iPad games released in the Apple App Store. We cover them all – good and not so good. The list is available every Monday, right as you are about to start that long work week.

Anyone already planning out their iPad 3 plans? According to industry rumors you’d better because it’s around a month away. However that does at least leave you a little time to build up your armada in Buccaneer Blitz Freemium. It’s a freebie this week that pits you against the enemy to see who can conquer the opposing sides islands. You can also call on your friends and take over their islands using spells and other sneaky pirate skills. Not a bad way to spend nothing at all.

Apparently, Roads of Rome HD was at one time a PC game so you may already have played this one before. If you haven’t or just want another go around insert $2.99 in the virtual money pail and embark on paving roads leading to Rome through dangerous Barbarian lands. It all takes place around the love one man has for Caesar’s daughter. If you are into strategy or time management games, this is right up your alley.

If platforming is more your speed, then Roboto is for you. The story involves Roboto, a robot boy in case you haven’t guessed, who is trying to be re-united with the robo girl of his memory chips (what? that wasn’t funny?). For $2.99, you get to trek through 30 levels, power up Robot’s skills, play mini-games, take on epic bosses, and collect Open Feint and Game Center achievements.

If you haven’t had your dose of crazy pills this week, you can pick up a prescription from Amateur Surgeon 2 HD. It’s available for $0.99 and is every bit as insane as you would expect based on previous installments. 51 years have gone by since your last surgery endeavors but Alan Probe is back for 20 more surgeries plus 10 new ones for the iPad. It’s crazy, it’s gory, it’s $0.99.

Xbox Live Update for the week of July 24 through 30, 2011

This week in the Xbox Live Arcade, it’s time to play God with From Dust. This game is the latest treat from Eric Chahi, creator of Another World. You will have to guide the inhabitants of a primitive world where nature is often violent and destructive. The tribe will need to channel the lost powers on its ancestors on their journey, but you have to keep them alive long enough to do it. If your tastes lean toward the strategic, this game is probably worth a look for you. From Dust is 1,200 Microsoft Points ($15). It’s also one of the Summer of Arcade games.

The others are Bastion, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Fruit Ninja Kinect and Toy Soldiers: Cold War. If you purchase all five through your Xbox Live account, Crimson Alliance will be yours for the low, low price of free. Crimson Alliance is coming September 2011.

Xbox Live’s ESPN features are getting a major upgrade in August, and Major Nelson talked about some of the changes. Split screen will allow you to check out two games at the same time. A live college football scoreboard will keep you updated on all the big games, and it can be used in concert with the split screen. If you have Kinect, you’ll be able to control all these features by voice activation. Game on, sports fans.

Dragon Age II gets the Legacy DLC. A criminal cartel is causing trouble and you’ll need to leave Kirkwall and head to an old Grey Warden prison to find out what’s up. Legacy is actually playable from any point in DA II’s campaign and you can earn a class specific, upgradable weapon for playing. Keeping that in mind, it could be worth it to start Legacy early on. This add-on is 800 MP.

Homefront adds a map pack called The Rock this week, taking you back to San Francisco and some of its infamous locales. It includes Alcatraz, The Bridge, Waterway and Overpass.

The Deal of the Week takes you to the far ends of the universe with Mass Effect 2 add-ons. Lair of the Shadow Broker and Kasumi’s Stolen Memory are both 280 MP. Arrival is 400 MP.

Xbox Live Update for the week of July 10 through 16, 2011

Time to blow some stuff up with Ms. Splosion Man, the sequel to Twisted Pixel’s Splosion Man. Big Science has captured the first game’s hero and has cracked the bubbly. Champagne shorts out some equipment unleashing Ms, Splosion Man on an unsuspecting world. Coming along with her are 50 levels of single player, a separate 50 level co-op campaign and oh so many explosions. In Twisted Pixel tradition, the game contains avatar items and awards for the truly dedicated sploders to unlock. Ms. Splosion Man is 800 Microsoft Points. ($10)

Nearly every week an arcade classic from days gone by returns for the era of HD. This week, Boulder Dash XL brings game heroes Rockford and Crystal back to the party. They’re ready to battle monsters, collect diamonds and show these young gaming whippersnappers a thing or two. Boulder Dash XL is 800 MP.

Warhammer 40,000 K: Kill Team puts you in the well-worn combat boots of one of the Emperor’s Space Marines. An Ork Krooser is headed for an Imperial Forge World. Cue that “Woo-hoo” song from Starship Troopers, it’s time to wreck shop. You can form a two-man team in split-screen to bring the pain to Orks and Tyranids. You can even unlock an exclusive Power Sword for use in Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine. This one is 800 MP.

L.A. Noire lets loose with Reefer Madness this week as well. This latest addition finds Cole Phelps and Roy Earle hot on the trail of some drug dealers. It’s 320 MP and contains five new achievements. Get out there, detective, and unleash swift justice on the criminals.

This week’s Deal of the Week is all about zombies. Dead Rising:Case West is 400 MP, Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare is 1,000 MP and Stubbs the Zombie is 800 MP. Left 4 Dead 2 add-on The Passing is 280 MP.

Gamertell Mashup: What we think of the 3DS

The 3DS has been available in North America for almost two weeks now, giving everyone plenty of time to start forming opinions on it. Both Kirk and I have had an opportunity to put our day-one purchases to the test and we’re ready to say exactly what we think. We’ve decided to discuss some of the most pertinent 3DS issues and concerns and tell you exactly what we think. I hope you’re ready to hear about battery life, games and those 3D-induced headaches!

So is the battery life really a dealbreaker?

Kirk: Battery life has yet to be an issue with me because I dock the 3DS every night. Having that piece of hardware sitting on a shelf in my office makes it very easy to keep the 3DS charged and to always know where it is. I imagine DS owners who are used to marathon gaming sessions or are away from a charging source for quite a while be highly inconvenienced by it, but it has yet to be a factor in my use.

Jenni: The 3DS battery life is pretty much what I’ve expected. I’m usually playing with the Wi-Fi off and the screen brightness set to 3, and I usually get about three hours of playtime. I’ve also mainly been playing 3DS games. I did manage to get four hours out of it once, when I set the brightness to 2 and turned on the power saving option, but that seemed to really affect the visuals so I doubt I’ll go back to that. Expect to charge your system every night, if you play it daily.

Is the 3DS a quality machine?

Jenni: The 3DS is heavier than a DS lite, despite being about the same size. However, it also feels more delicate to me. I almost feel like I have to baby it, but I think that’s hyper-sensitivity on my part, since it’s new and I think I’m still worried about handling it. I haven’t had any issues with hinges, but I could see how some people would. The system itself is very visually appealing, and the black 3DS looks very sleek and impressive. You wouldn’t guess it’s a Nintendo handheld, as it looks quite substantial and professional. I also like that the finish on the outer lid and bottom of the system are fingerprint resistant – I’ve only noticed prints and smudges on the inside top lid.

Kirk: The outer lid is fingerprint resistant? Not on my blue model. It’s not as bad as with the DSi XL, but you can still detect grease smudges quite easily. I’ll be placing a skin over it fairly quickly. Regarding the overall quality, I’m mostly impressed. There’s less creaking with the 3DS than with my XL, and the buttons are all solid. It still doesn’t seem to be built as well as my iPhone or iPad, but that’s likely just because there are actual moving parts.

So how do those 3DS games look?

Kirk: Quite honestly, i wasn’t expecting the graphics to look this good. I’ve been playing Pilotwings Resort and Samurai Warriors: Chronicles. Pilotwings looks like a standard DS game, but Samurai Warriors looks more like what I’ve come to expect from the iPhone. Characters are still jagged, yes, but the overall quality is much, much better than what we’ve seen on the DS (keep in mind, though, I’m used to the DSi XL, where everything looks pixelated).

I like the depth the 3D adds to the game. After playing for a while, you grow used to it and it just feels natural, not like a gimmick. I mostly take note of it during menu screens and such where text is risen above the background images or where clouds float above strategy maps. The only real drawback so far for me is that I tend to shift around a lot while playing game, moving the DS out of the 3D “comfort zone.” So, things get blurry and gray from time to time. I’ve heard complaints that the 3D makes it difficult for other people to watch the screen, but honestly, I don’t want anyone standing that close to me to begin with. The DS screen is too small to be shared with onlookers, and now I have an excuse to drive them away.

Jenni: I’m very impressed with the 3DS graphics. I’d almost say they’re PS2, perhaps even Wii-quality. I’ve mainly been playing Nintendogs + Cats, Samurai Warriors: Chronicles and Super Monkey Ball 3D though, three games that seem like they were designed to make the most of the system’s capabilities.

As for 3D, I can’t really judge. I turned it on a few times, just to see how each of my three games and that OK Go “White Knuckles” looked in 3D, but never really left it on for more than 10 minutes. It’s an interesting gimmick and it seems like it’s been used well so far, but it takes too much of a toll on battery power so I don’t bother with it.

As for the launch lineup and included applications…

Jenni: I’m enjoying the included 3DS apps more than I thought I would. I especially like the Find Mii RPG in the StreetPass Mii Plaza, and enjoy collecting new hats for my Miis once I pass new people. Face Raiders is also more entertaining than I thought it would be. I’m very disappointed that the internet browser wasn’t available at launch though, since it’s an essential function.

As for the launch lineup, it’s pretty much what I expected. The original DS’ launch lineup wasn’t exactly stunning – the only game I grabbed was Feel the Magic XY/XX – so the 3DS’ is actually more impressive in comparison. I’ve been especially impressed with Nintendogs + Cats and Samurai Warriors: Chronicles, and will probably eventually grab Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition as well. The next few months look promising though, with Cave Story 3D and Devil Survivor Overclock on the way.

Kirk: As I mentioned in a previous Gametell article, Face Raiders is a perfect game to include with the system. It’s very easy to pick up and play, it shows off the 3D effect quite well, and people really get a kick out of seeing their faces on the screen. The AR titles are clever, but largely unplayable due to the need to keep the 3DS a set distance from the playing surface. That’ s a gimmick I could’ve done without.

As for the launch titles, thank God for Samurai Warriors: Chronicles, which will hopefully keep me busy until more titles roll off the assembly line. I would have tried Madden, but too many people have said it feels rushed and limited. That, and I tend to suck at sports games, anyway. Nintendo would’ve moved a lot more of these things if they’d had a Zelda, Metroid or Mario game ready to go, but not having one meant it was easier for me to get a 3DS on launch day.

What do you think of DS games on the 3DS?

Kirk: I won’t do it. I still have the DSi XL and my daughter’s DSi, so I have no need to play old DS games on the new system. I did try it, though, and wasn’t that put off by the how the games look. Again, though, I’m used to the DSi XL. I don’t think owners of that will notice a huge difference, other than that the slight blurriness doesn’t come with the benefit of bigger screens. DS and DSi owners, however, will have to get used to it. My suggestion is to hold on to your current system if you plan to continue playing regular DS games.

Jenni: I think DS games could have been executed better on the 3DS, but it isn’t as bad as I expected or heard. Yes, DS games do look a lot better on the actual DS, but in a pinch a 3DS does just as well. The games don’t completely fill the top screen unless you hold select to force them to, but then the quality is compromised so you probably won’t want to bother with that. On the plus side, the audio is superior on the 3DS, so DS games sound much better. I found it was much easier to hear the music and voice acting in games like Daigasso Band Brothers and Vampire Knight DS.

Have there been any headaches?

Jenni: When I first tore my 3DS from its box and started playing, I did notice a bit of discomfort. At that point, I wanted to have the 3D effects on and enjoy everything the system had to offer. It was almost a bit disorienting, trying to get the system adjusted to the right level of 3D for me. I also found I had to step back from a game I was playing (Super Monkey Ball 3D) twice because my eyes started feeling achy and my head started to hurt.

Now, it almost feels like I’ve built up a tolerance to it. I only play in 3D mode when the system is plugged in and stationary, with the 3D slider only barely set to 3D, and haven’t experienced any other issues. As long as you take breaks every 30-45 minutes, look outside, stand up and walk around for a few minutes, you should be fine.

Kirk: I haven’t had a single problem, but I’m one of those lucky types who rarely gets headaches to begin with. No eye strain, no discomfort, just 3D gaming goodness. The first time I showed the 3DS to my wife, however, she looked at it for just a few seconds before saying, “I hate that. I don’t want to have to look at that.” I imagine she’d feel differently from me after a short while of playing.

I don’t turn the 3D up all the way, though. It’s just shy of the maximum setting, as I’ve found that seems to give me the cleanest 3D image. The good thing is that if you do get headaches or discomfort, you can just shut off the 3D and not have to stop playing altogether. Nintendo was wise to include that option.

Xbox Live Update for the week of March 20 through 26, 2011

Who you gonna call for four-player, ghost-trapping arcade action? Oh, I think you know. Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime hits the marketplace this week, a top-down arcade scrolling adventure in the style of Gauntlet or Smash TV. Four new characters will dodge slime, cross streams and drive the new ECTO-4WD. There is local and online multiplayer, in fact this game is designed with multiplayer in mind. This Atari release launches at 800 Microsoft Points ($10), less than the usual 1200 MP for brand new releases. You have the tools, you have the talent.

Swarm is an action platformer that puts you in charge of 50 blue creatures you will guide through obstacles in the hope at least one survives. Of course, the more of your little creatures that make it through unscathed, the higher you will rise on the leaderboards. Swarm is 1200 MP.

Demos available this week include WWE All-Stars and Zumba Fitness. WWE All-Stars is an arcade style grappler pitting today’s stars such as John Cena against WWE legends including “Macho Man” Randy Savage. The demo pits the high-flying Rey Mysterio against the powerhouse Ultimate Warrior.

Zumba Fitness is a dance fitness title that allows you to use the hottest international music tracks to burn off the calories. This one is for Microsoft Kinect, so you’ll need to go controller free to experience the action in this demo.

The Deal of The Week is old school-inspired as Sonic The Hedgehog 4 is on sale for 800 MP. This is the latest installment in the adventures of the hedgehog that led the way in the console war for Sega back in the day. Sonic is back to his 2D roots in this one. No romances with human princesses, no gun-toting Shadow and no ill-fated hoverboard races.

Games on Demand gets Western thriller Call of Juarez for $19.99, Supreme Commander 2 for $29.99 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs for $49.99.

Rock Band 3 keeps a steady stream of content coming and this week it’s the Billy Joel Piano Challenge. Can you handle I Go To Extremes, The Night the Lights Went Out on Broadway, My Life, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant and She’s Always a Woman? The singles are $1.99, or you can have the whole group for $9.99.

Highlights from Activision’s earnings call

There was so much news to come out of Activision’s earnings call with investors yesterday, you would think there was a big convention going on. Activision made several cuts to employees, announced new services and outlined what games it and Blizzard will be producing over the next couple years. In case you missed out on the announcements, we’ve put everything together for you in one easy to find place.

The Day the Music Died

Activision shut down its Guitar Hero business unit. This also led the company to cancel an unannounced Guitar Hero project for 2011. This also means the DJ Hero series is no more. Activision will only release downloadable music tracks it has previously announced. Other than that, DLC for the games will stop entirely.

Pink Slips A’ Plenty

Activision let around 500 employees go as a result of its cancelled projects.

Crime Doesn’t Pay

True Crime: Hong Kong was cancelled. Activision felt the game “just wasn’t going to be good enough.” Compared to other open world games available and forthcoming such as Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire, Activision didn’t think continued investment was worth it.

The Hawk Has Landed

Skateboarding games will take 2011 off. This means there won’t be a new Tony Hawk iteration coupled with a ridiculous skateboarding controller.

Duty Calls

Beachhead is a new studio dedicated to delivering in-game digital content to Call of Duty games. It’s meant to expand CoD‘s audience, “supercharge” the franchise and monetize the series. China will be getting a free-to-play CoD game in the future. It will be supported with microtransactions.

Cold Shoulder

Blizzard doesn’t expect to release a new game in 2011. Instead, the company will release two games in 2012.

Web Slingin’ Wipeout

Activision will release a new Spider-Man game in 2011. It will also release games based on the TV shows Wipeout and Family Guy.

Think of the Children

Activision is set to unveil a new project at the New York City Toy Fair this month. It will apparently combine the internet, videogames and toys.
