NPD Report: Top ten game titles for October 2010
Although NPD Group has revamped the way it reports game sale data, it sent out it report for October 2010 sans sales figures. The chart below represents the new format which lists individual titles, combing the same name games from all consoles into the single title. The new report also combines Game of the Year more »
August NPD sales: All hail Microsoft and Madden
The August 2010 NPD numbers are in. These industry sales numbers are dated from August 1, 2010 to August 28, 2010. There aren’t a whole lot of surprises here. The top two games of the month are Madden 11 for the Xbox 360 and PS3. The Xbox 360 is also the top selling console of the month with over 356,000 units sold.
Summer sales slump hurts GameStop’s shares
The summer gaming doldrums hit the world’s largest videogame retailer hard, as GameStop missed its second-quarter earnings expectations and lowered third-quarter projections. The Wall Street Journal reports that GameStop shares fell seven percent in midday trading after the news broke. GameStop’s shares are 12 percent off for 2010 so far.
Increase in casual gamers, game sales decrease in 2009
NPD Group reports that two-thirds of Americans now game through social networks, cellphones, and oh yeah, video game consoles. And six out of ten households have at least one game console. In spite of those numbers, the bad economy slowed down overall game sales. Game and system sales are expected to drop below 2008′s record $21.3 billion. That will mark the first sales drop since 2004, and it’s happening despite Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all slashing console prices.
October’s top 20 shows Uncharted on top
That’s right, kids, Nathan Drake’s latest PS3 adventure was the top-selling game of October, 2009. Everyone who made bets on that – time to pay up. The rest of the top 20 list shows the usual suspects (like Wii Fit Plus at #2 and Wii Sports Resort at #4) and one big surprise – the unfortunately-apostrophed Demon’s Souls made it in, at the 11th position. Borderlands also did very well, snagging the 3rd (Xbox 360) and 17th (PS3) places on the chart.
Fitness games generating big business for the industry
Remember that moldy stereotype that gamers are all overweight, couch-crusty adolescents? Well, we actually have financial proof that it’s not the case anymore (not that it ever was) – in a recent story at 1Up, it was revealed that the new genre of fitness games has created an incredible $2 billion in revenue. The report originally comes from the Games for Health Project, and the figure was generated in just 18 months. Holy guacamole.
NPD’s Top 20 US video games sales report for May 2009
Independent research company NPD Group has released its US video game sales numbers for May 2009.
The best selling game for the month was THQ’s new release, UFC Undisputed 2009 for Xbox 360 (the PS3 release came in fourth).
Six Wii games made the chart followed closely by the Xbox 360 and DS with five games each. Only three PS3 games made the list, although two were in the top five, and not a single PSP, PS2 or PC/Mac game made the Top 20.
The oldest game on the chart for the month is Mario Kart DS release in November 2005 coming in at number 12, down from eighth place in April 2009. Eight games released in May 2009 made the list.
Game industry rakes in more than $20 billion in 2008
It’s hard to tell from all the closures, layoffs and other bad financial info we talk about all day but according to research firm NPD Group, the video game industry pulled down huge profits in 2008.
According to NPD’s stats, computer, video game and peripheral sales added up to $21 billion in 2008 with entertainment software comprising up to $11.7 billion of that. That’s a jump of more than 23 percent from 2007, although it probably does little to console the numerous people in the industry that lost jobs recently.
Also interesting to note is that more than half of those software sales are considered…
A force is unleased on September 2008 NPD charts
The NPD report has been released for September 2008 and Star Wars fans sure made a Force-ful impact.
Along with the positive news that total game sales were $1.27 billion, Star Wars fans had the pleasure of seeing their games place high on the charts. The console iteration of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed placed in 3 of the top 10 spots in this month, totaling 1.16 million in individual sales. The Xbox 360 version of the game accounted for 52 percent of those sales, with the Playstation 3 version taking 28 percent. Other notable games that appeared on the software side of the NPD charts included Wii Fit, Nintendo’s “exercise simulator,” the latest iteration of Mario Kart, the ever-present Wii Play and…
Analysts predict July NPD numbers, see massive growth in software sales
It’s time for a little pre-NPD predicting: GameDaily has the scoop on three major industry analysts’ takes on July sales. Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter, EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich and Lazard Capital Markets’ Colin Sebastian all predicted serious growth and Wii dominance (shocking!), though each had different specifics. Pachter predicted 44% growth in overall software sales and more »
