Review: Ultramarines (A Warhammer 40,000 movie)

Ultramarines follows a 12-man squad of Ultramarines as they are sent to respond to a distress call from an Imperial shrine that’s guarded by a different legion of space marine, the Imperial Fists. The squad is predominantly rookie-based and are looking for combat so that they can join the list of veterans in the Ultramarines. Soon some realize there is something wrong about this mission as they start running into the forces of Chaos that surround and, in some cases, infest the Imperial holy ground…

Dead Space animated movie releasing alongside Dead Space 2

Many times a video game doesn’t have the well-developed plot or characters to transition into a successful movie. Someone does it anyway, though. Dead or Alive and Postal leap immediately to mind.

The universe of Dead Space, however, just screams movie adaptation.

Anchor Bay Entertainment will release Dead Space Aftermath, an animated film, on January 25, 2011, alongside Dead Space 2. It’s $34.99 on Blu-Ray and $26.98 on DVD. There’s also a prequel book coming out on December 29, 2010.

Alternate Disc-Tractions: Toy Story 3 Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download review

The most emotional and visually stunning of the three Toy Story films, this is also the the best of the bunch. So is it worthy bringing home? Well, of course it is. Find out why…

Gamertell Review: Tangled 3D (movie)

Loosely based on the classic German fairy tale, Rapunzel, Tangled may be the girliest major animated princess flick Disney has ever released.

It’s a love story that stars a princess who dances, sings and paints while dreaming, a horse that acts like a dog, plenty of hair combing and a lot of pretty, glittery lights. It should make you gag just thinking about it yet the movie, much like Rapunzel, is far more cute and fun than annoying…

Alternate Disc-Tractions: The Lord of the Rings animated movie Blu-ray review

This dark and strange animated telling of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings by director Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, American Pop, Wizards, Cool World) has been released to coincide with Blu-ray release of Peter Jackson ‘s live-action Lord of the Rings trilogy.

It’s a bit creepy, has a unique visual style and, being the first official LOTR film, certainly helped to set the tone for future adaptations. You definitelyneed to watch this (with an open mind)…

Alternate Disc-Tractions: Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on Blu-ray, DVD

It’s difficult to deny the fun, imagination and creativity of these films in any form. What does become clear even between these two movies – especially after watching them in high def – is that, over time, not only has our expectations for films become more demanding but so have Pixar’s skills have become equally adept.

Alternate Disc-Tractions: Ponyo on Blu-ray, DVD

Miayazaki’s films can arguably be described as a bit too weird for American audiences to accept, lacking a clear, super-hero style main character and, instead focusing on normal people in not-so-normal circumstances. Most times he exudes a mood more than a clear, linear story in his films, though this may be one of the most linear of his productions (thanks to the film’s literary inspiration).

Some elements in Ponyo may not immediately endear older American viewers but the overall story will prove entertaining to its true target: very young viewers.

Animated Lord of the Rings movie being remastered, released on DVD and Blu-ray

For all you Middle Earth fans out there, I have some rather pleasant news.

The animated classic The Lord of the Rings by Ralph Bakshi, director of films including Cool World and Fritz the Cat, is being digitally remastered and will be released in a new deluxe edition.

The film has been redone with New Dolby 5.1 audio and picture quality and will be distributed as a single disc DVD and Blu-ray combo, which features a Blu-ray, DVD and bonus digital copy. Also available for digital download…
