Warlords rises from the Atari 2600′s ashes to assault PS3s and Xbox 360s
Warlords are on the warpath again! Those dragons better beware, because it won’t be so easy for them to take down castles with an army around. Atari is tapping into it’s original Atari 2600 game in the hopes it will translate well into a downloadable, multiplayer PS3 and Xbox 360 game. So before Summer 2011 ends, players will be working against or with other players to protect a castle from fireball spewing dragons.
See, in Warlords the fireballs come crashing down…
Ad Spotting: Retro game and tech scans from 1978 Playboy magazine
Playboy magazine used to be fat. No, I’m not talking about the women (and, yes, this post is entirely suitable for work).
The magazines were hundreds of pages thick containing a lot more advertisements and longer articles than you’ll find in today’s comparatively anemic issues. Thanks to a collector Gamertell writer, we have some especially groovy retro video game and tech scans to share with you…
Atari’s Haunted House reopens after 30 years
You’ll be able to prove you aren’t afraid of any ghosts in Fall 2010, with Atari’s Haunted House. The 1981 Atari 2600 game is being remade, reimagined and adapted for the Wii, Xbox 360 and Windows PC. And just in time for the 30th anniversary of the game.
In the original Haunted House, the player was represented by a pair of glowing eyes and had to investigate the haunted home…
Flapjack’s sweet Atari retro luggage tags
Flapjack Toys, makers of spooky figures and plush, has announced a few new Retro Tags, including two that gamers will certainly attach to their bags.
First is a luggage tag bearing the black-and-orange likeness of the infamous Atari 2600 Joystick (style 6012), measuring approximately 3.8 in. by 4.5 in. One the face is ye olde joystick and the other has the standard clear plastic sleeve to insert your important info (for when your luggage gets sent to a place better than you are traveling).
The second retro luggage tag features the familiar sunset style Atari logo…
The gaming cupcake game
This is one of the coolest uses of cupcakes and gaming that I’ve ever seen. Some folks over at Steel Head Studio have created 100 gaming-related cupcakes, some from the board gaming-realm, but most from the wonderful land of videogaming.
Console Classix relaunch results in more gaming options for users
If you’re without a Wii, it also means you’re without Virtual Console, one of the few means of playing classic video games you may not be able to play anymore. Fortunately, websites exist online where you can subscribe to get access to these games and play via your computer, and one of them is Console Classix. In fact, Console Classix has just experienced a site relaunch, which has not only made playing classic games with them easier, but has added to the number of systems the site supports.
There are two ways to play at Console Classix. You can create a free account which allows you to play the Atari 2600, ColecoVision and NES games available on the site. So even if you go free, you’ll have access to hundreds of games. Or, you can pay for a full account, either $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year, and you’ll be able to play all of the Atari 2600, ColecoVision, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Gear, Genesis, Nintendo, Sega Master System and Super Nintendo games available on the site. So far, over 3,000 games are available and you can check out the site’s library before you subscribe.
The only catch is, only Windows PCs can take advantage of Console Classix’s program…
Obama spokesman says White House is as technologically advanced as an old Atari
One of the main distinctions that made Barack Obama’s election so noteworthy to observers was how he was able to embrace technology. Whether that was through clever advertising, smartly-placed television addresses or building an unexpected presence in video games, Obama made it clear that he was willing to tap into current societal trends in order to ensure success for America.
However, translating that technological savvy to the White House’s resources has proven difficult, as Obama’s staff has quickly figured out that their new home is not necessarily the most technologically creative place on the block…
Lexus ad tickled my inner 8-year-old, not my thinning wallet
You’re likely seen that Lexus TV commercial with the kid playing Centipede on his Atari 2600, remembering it as his best Christmas ever. Until he gets a Lexus, that is. (If you have not, click through and give it a looksie).
Sure, a car would be a pretty memorable gift but nothing will surpass this gamer’s best Christmas gift ever as the Atari 2600. Spending hours mastering Combat and Air Sea Battle with my younger sister, even beating my father at a marathon match up of Breakout a year later. This little system brought together the family like few other gifts ever could.
Certainly it was pricey for the time but, a car, well…

M Network (actually Mattel Electronics) has released its first catalog of 11 games for the Atari VCS and, dude, does it look totally awesome.
First, the box art is choice featuring black and gnarly silver ink. It will certainly impress your friends when you go to pull out the cartridge. Second, these games feature way more colors than other games, even using multiple shades of…
