Xbox Live Update for the week of September 4 through 10, 2011
It’s another big week with four titles in the Xbox Live Arcade. Crimson Alliance is an action-RPG that sees you fighting the Cult of the Soul Siren. You can choose from the wizard Direwolf, mercenary Gnox, or the assassin, Moonshade. Crimson Alliance supports Xbox Live co-op for up to four players. The download is free. Watch this move, though. One character is 800 Microsoft Points, all three are 1200 MP. If you download the free version, you get a “trial character” and numerous prompts to buy a real character. Thank the “freemium” gaming model for this price structure. It has already been the source of a fair amount of confusion.
Majesco reintroduces Rayne in BloodRayne: Betrayal
It’s been six years since we’ve seen Majesco’s dhampir (half vampire, half human) Rayne, but that doesn’t mean the publisher’s forgotten about her. Nope, she’s coming back! We already had heard a 3DS BloodRayne game, called BloodRayne: The Shroud, was being developed, but now it turns out BloodRayne: Betrayal is in the works too! So prepare your PS3s and Xbox 360s for a new game download in 2011. Soon it will be hunting season, and vampires will be your prey.
BloodRayne: Betrayal has Rayne working for the Brimstone Society again…
Uwe Boll confirms he is working on Bloodrayne 3
Bloodrayne was a once promising game franchise featuring a sexy vampire heroine who kills Nazis. How could that be anything but cool? Well, now Bloodrayne is infamous for two really horrible Uwe Boll movies based on the character.
There’s no kind of Uwe Boll movie other than really horrible, unfortunately. The German director best known for excruciatingly bad game-to-film adaptations confirmed he is working on a third Bloodrayne installment.
Boll told Dread Central the third film will be called Bloodrayne 3: Warhammer and that Kristanna Loken, who starred in the first film, is returning. Also, Bloodrayne is going back to her gaming roots as the film is set during World War II.
Uwe Boll to receive Worst Career Achievement Razzie
If you want to guarantee winning a lifetime achievement award from the Golden Raspberries, directing a large number of video game to film translations is an excellent way to start.
Uwe Boll, the man in the director’s chair for cinematic disasters including Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead, is receiving the Worst Career Achievement Award from The Razzies. The awards, which will be handed out February 21, 2009, honor, er, recognize the worst in film and nobody’s more identifiable with bad movies than Boll. He had another exceptional year as his In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale is also up for…
The trouble with Uwe Boll
More often than not when you hear about the films House of the Dead, Bloodrayne, Alone in the Dark or In the Name of the King, there is a background of insulting murmurs of complete and utter contempt. They, and other absolutely horrid game-based movies, are either produced, written or directed by Uwe Boll.
Even though the majority of people can – and most likely will – argue that he is the worst thing to happen to game-based films, it’s a wonder why people still go to see his movies.
The trouble with Uwe Boll is that he wants respect but he’s going about it the wrong way…
Cut/Scenes: When bad game movies happen to good actors
Last week’s announcement that Jake Gyllenhaal will play the title role in the new Prince of Persia movie got our little hearts aflutter here at cut/scenes, and not just for obvious (read: shallow) reasons. Along with recent news that Gore Verbinski will direct the BioShock film, it’s a signal that serious, big name talent is beginning to flock to videogame adaptations. Better, bigger talent should mean better, bigger movies, right?
Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Some incredible (and big name) performers have popped up in videogame movies so bad you’d swear they (and their agents) were inebriated during the whole contract process. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the lowest-blow career moves ever made in videogame movies:
Cut/Scenes: Lame game movie nights Part 1
This week, Cut/Scenes is taking a step away from critiquing filmic influence in games and complaining about the nature of poor adaptations. Instead, we’re celebrating some of the campy classics that have given game movies a bad name. We present to you the first in a semi-regular series of lame game movie nights, in which we recap the experiences of one intrepid game columnist as she gets into the Mystery Science Theater mindset with some of the genre’s “classics”. This week, we “enjoy” a double feature of Uwe Boll’s notorious BloodRayne and the Angelina Jolie actionfest Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
Lame game movie night #1: Girl PowerSo there I was on a quiet Thursday evening, ready to begin my first lame game movie night. The festivities began with BloodRayne, a film that notoriously scored 4% fresh…
Alone in the Dark 2 movie cast announced
The cast list has been announced for Uwe Boll’s latest game-based movie masterpiece, including the talents of Rick Yune (Fast and the Furious, Die Another Day), Lance Hendriksen (Pumpkinhead, Aliens) and Ralf Moeller (Far Cry, Postal, Seed). The storyline will involve a band of witch hunters and their prey.
The film is set to begin shooting…
