Blizzard and Hasbro to release tabletop mashups including WOW Monopoly, StarCraft Risk
Blizzard and USAOPOLY strike a deal that will put World of Warcraft and StarCraft on your kitchen table. In a good way.
DungeonQuest gets a world transplant
Way back in 1985 a curious dungeon crawl board game hit store shelves called DungeonQuest.
Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) just released a new version of DungeonQuest on August 25, 2010, to the delight of fans eager to take another go at the dragon’s hoard. FFG has altered the game, translating it over to their Runebound universe, but I don’t see the game changing much. The original DungeonQuest used a generic fantasy setting than can only be improved by adding the heroes and items common to Runebound, RuneWars, and Descent, the latter being the ultimate in current dungeon crawl games. Better components mean a higher price, but $60 is actually a bit low by today’s standards for big games.
Risk getting revamped (with zombies)
With Risk: Factions, EA is giving a classic board game a few new faces to play with. The company is also tweaking the rules, maps and adding objectives…
Researchers demonstrate interactive board game technology (with video)
A long time ago board games were all the rage.
People used to sit around a table and spend hours throwing the dice, spinning wheels and flipping cards while moving the little pieces around a board. With the appearance of video games, for many people the focus changed from a table to the TV and now several of those board games are a thing of the past (or ironically turned into video games).
Now, thanks to a couple of Canadian researchers, board games may be making a come back.
Roel Vertegaal and Eric Akaoka, of Queen’s University, are developing a way to make interactive board games in a whole new way. By using a projector and a motion tracking camera they can create interactive playing cards that react to motion and their position in relation to other cards. An image is projected on the cards and the camera tracks their motion so when they are in the right position, like next to another card, the images on both cards interact.
Comic Con 2009: Gettin’ telekenetic with Mattel’s Mind Flex
Have you ever thought you had telekinesis? Well it turns out everyone does! I didn’t believe it myself until I tried out the new Mind Flex game by Mattel at Comic Con this year.
I was introduced to a nice man who told me I was about to play a game where I have to move a small foam ball through an obstacle course using only my mind. Of course I was skeptical but then he strapped this helmet to my head (which attaches to your ears as well) and showed me the course…
Jessi’s side of Gamertell’s Dokapon Kingdom experience
So, my good friend and Gamertell assistant editor Jenni came over the other day with a little game called Dokapon Kingdom for the Wii. It’s a RPG style board game where you have to save towns and get lots of money. You can play against your friends or the comp to get the most money and towns. Oh and you can cause your friends lots of problems and annoyance, fun.
We decided to play since we heard that this game is known to destroy friendships. So far I can see why! We start out fine, she tells me the ropes of the game and I pick my character, a yellow witch, which I later regretted since she is weak without a magic spell (which you don’t start out with!). I was actually leading money wise for while until Jenni got her first town, then her second town, third, and eventually FIFTH town! This was only like an hour into the game.
I was basically having horrible luck, she got to the kingdom right away, and it took my so long that the king eventually hauled me over there impatiently. See you have to land EXACTLY on certain spaces, such as shops and the castle space…

EA and Hasbro team up for games
EA and Hasbro have just created an agreement which will allow EA to make video games based on various Hasbro properties. Some of the first toys and games which will be getting the video game treatment are Littlest Pet Shop, NERF, Monopoly, Scrabble and Yahtzee. The games will be prepared for console, mobile and web releases. Many of the titles, such as Littlest Pet Shop, NERF N-Strike, Scrabble, Monopoly Here and Now and Yahtzee Adventures will be shown at the New York Toy Fair running February 17-19, 2008.
Cranium coming to the Wii
Straight from the match made in heaven department, Ubisoft has announced it will be bringing a console version of popular board game Cranium to the Wii this December. Cranium Kabookii will feature classic Cranium gameplay while making copious use of the WiiMote and special glasses (allowing the player to read clues on the screen).
Cranium is a perfect match for the Wii and its fanbase. The game is organized around four areas of activities (the idea being that it will play well among people with different strengths) – language skills (for example, spelling a word backwards); Performance skills (think charades, or humming the tune to a song), artistic skills (drawing, etc.) and trivia questions. Players move around the board in…
EA and Hasbro strike a deal
EA Casual, a newly launched arm of Electronic Arts, will be soon developing games based on popular Hasbro franchises. Hasbro and EA Casual have finalized a licensing deal. The games developer will churn out games for all conceivable platforms including consoles, web and mobile devices. This augurs well for EA Casual, as the label was born only in June 2007.
The quid-pro-quo end of the bargain means that even Hasbro would be allowed to make toys and traditional games based on popular EA games franchises. EA plans to release the first Hasbro-based games in 2008 though no word was given on when Hasbro will begin releasing EA-inspired toys.
