CES 2009: Blu-ray format could be in jeopardy, might bring down PS3 with it
It’s fitting that the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) takes place in Las Vegas, because at this show we learn which companies have gambler’s instincts. Sony went all in betting that Blu-ray technology would win the next-gen video disc wars, adding Blu-ray capability to its PlayStation 3 consoles.
Microsoft, on the other hand, hedged its bets with the HD-DVD format. While the console didn’t come packaged with HD-DVD capability, gamers could purchase an add-on drive to upgrade. So at the last CES (2008) when Warner Bros. ended the war by announcing it would no longer support HD-DVD, it certainly looked like a win for Sony.
A year later Sony and Blu-ray still have not garnered that much anticipated victory. One of the biggest obstacles is…
CES 2009: SanDisk selling Rock Band 2 SD Cards for Wii
It’s very difficult to have a game that relies so heavily on extra downloadable content such as Rock Band 2 on the Wii after seeing what its PS3 and Xbox 360 counterparts have to offer.
Since the Wii doesn’t have a hard drive, owners have been forced to buy SD cards to store all the extra content they purchase. Nintendo will debut the music store for Rock Band 2 in 2009 and SanDisk is offering a way to store those songs if there is no room in the Wii’s internal memory. It may be a standard 2GB SD card but it is labeled with the Rock Band 2 and…
CES 2009: Lenovo to show off IdeaCentre gaming PC with remote controller
We shouldn’t count the PC market out of the casual gaming market just yet. This generation has rammed motion controls into our brains courtesy of the Nintendo Wii and Lenovo is hoping to capitalize on the idea.
The company has revealed the IdeaCentre A600 All-in-One Desktop that comes with a controller similar to a Wii Remote. Lenovo even has some games that take advantage of the remote right out of the box. One such bowling game uses the remote to, well, bowl. Lenovo is working on more games to use with the remote but isn’t ready to name any titles yet.
In addition to being a motion-based remote, it will also do a number of every day tasks including…
CES 2009: Capcom to show off Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5
Yes, we always talk about how game companies should do different things. But when you look at the sales charts, sequels keep raking in the bucks. There’s something safe about the familiar games that always deliver.
Capcom has two such franchises in Resident Evil and Street Fighter and the latest installments of both will be on display at the International Consumer Electronics Show (January 8 through 11, 2008)…
CES 2009: WiTricity promises a world without any cables
We’ve all been in a situation in which we had to choose which one of our electricity powered devices would be plugged in and which one would go wanting. We’ve resorted to using bundles of extension cords and power strips that can may not be so easy on the eyes when company comes over to watch a movie or play games.
The 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is expected to show off the first products that have done away with all of those troublesome cables once and for all, according to The Observer.
Products such as digital picture frames, speakers and forms of lighting will show off what “WiTricity” is all about.
