Review: Wizard Kings board game

Wizard Kings is a fantasy wargame from Columbia Games. While scenarios vary, players generally control a fantasy race or faction, led by – you guessed it – a wizard king capable of casting battle-altering spells.

Pokemon card game goes online

There have been dozens, if not hundreds of collectible card games (CCGs), but none have come close to Magic: The Gathering (M:TG). A long running distant second has been the Pokemon Trading Card game, which is more popular with the younger, 10 and under, crowd. M:TG has had a successful online version for years, so it was only a matter of time before Pokemon was also playable via the internet. That time has come.

Collectible cards come to Dungeons and Dragons

Apparently Gamma World cards are a hit and WotC now plans to release Fortune Cards for D&D and I can’t help but hear ghostly echoes of the warnings from a decade ago.

Gary Gygax’s toys are for sale

Gary Gygax, the father of role playing games, passed away March 4, 2008, leaving behind a legacy that stretched from some friends playing in his basement in 1967, to millions of people paying monthly premiums for World of Warcraft today. Gygax didn’t just create games, he played them, and who wouldn’t want to take a peek in his game closet, or better yet own something from it?

Matty Collector today announced its exclusive December 1, 2010, availability of the Ghosbusters PKE Meter reproduction gadget.

Selling for $60, this is described as a “movie-accurate PKE Meter, available for the first time from Mattel.” It will also include “light sequences from both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, adjustable LED and screen animation speeds, three screen displays as seen in the films (diagonal, off, arc) and opening wings.”

Warhammer: Invasion – March of the Damned card game expansion pack

Fantasy Flight Games just released the second deluxe expansion for Invasion, March of the Damned. $30 gets you 155 more cards, expanding the other factions and introducing lizard men and vampires, as well as new card mechanics…

Gamertell Review: Geek Fight! trading card game

Geeks are usually considered to be awkward, a bit gangly and often without much tact. They also like to argue with each other, sometimes degrading into what would be a silly looking slap fight. Sounds like the perfect premise for a game, eh?

Diving Dragon Games has taken the humorous idea of a pair of geeks in awkward slap match to the table in the form of Geek Fight! the trading card game. This indie card game does have love of the game on its side and gets big kudos for decent production value and humor. However, much like the geeks it parodies, it needs a less geeky friend to help make the game a little more newbie friendly.

ThinkGeek June 2008 catalog’s game-related goodies

The most recent issue of ThinkGeek catalog has been delivered and, as usual, it features several gamer goodies. Here’s a list of the more (and less) notable game-related goodies in the June 2008 ThinkGeek catalog.

On the more notable side there’s a programmable keyboard with mini OLEDs, Mario Kart slot cars, Halo 3 replicas and Zelda plush…

New Star Wars PocketModel TCG: Pics and ships

WizKids recently sent me samples of their latest Trading Card Game, Star Wars PocketModel TCG, released this past week (late June 2007).

Each game pack, which retails for $4.99, includes 4-8 pocket models (on two plastic cards), 6 game cards, an instruction/rules sheet and a pair of really tiny dice. The unique, and rather unusual, aspect of this game is that the “pocket models” are actually miniature ships. A free sample coupons is available on the WizKids’ web site where you type in your zip code and print the resulting page to pick two free cards and three ships (an X-Wing and two TIE Fighters) at a local shop. The coupon expires July 30, 2007.

Each plastic card in a game pack contains glossy, full-color precut ship parts that you pop out and piece together referencing a tiny wireframe diagram and itty, bitty guide letters on each connection point.
