There are at least two crimes I thought no one these days would attempt. The first is robbing moving trains. The second is tunneling into a business with the intention of robbing it. That’s exactly what one Tennessee man did to a GameStop on January 4.
Over 100 copies of CoD: Black Ops stolen from Maryland GameStop
A GameStop in Maryland was robbed over the weekend by individuals armed with semi-automatic guns. The suspects struck the store on Saturday night right before closing. Police arrived around 9:20pm, but not before the robbers got away with four cases of Call of Duty: Black Ops. The cases were reported to contain over 100 copies of the game.
Woman accused of using WoW to solicit sex from a teen
In an unusual turn of events, a woman is being accused of using a videogame to groom a teenage boy into having sex. Angie L. Jenkins from Lowell, MI is said to have traveled to Amherst, NY to meet with a 16-year-old for sex. The two met while playing World of Warcraft.
Violence strikes Comic-Con, man gets stabbed near eye socket
The incident occurred in between panels for the films Resident Evil: Afterlife and Paul. Reports say two men started fighting over a seat in the auditorium’s Hall H. The fight came to a head when the suspect allegedly pulled out an object, supposedly a pen, and stabbed the victim in the face. The suspect was held down by Comic-Con attendees before the authorities arrived.
Man gets double life in prison for Xbox murder
A 19 year old Colorado teenager was sentenced to two life sentences as well as 35 additional years in prison after being convicted for murder, aggravated battery, robbery of an at-risk adult, conspiracy and being an accessory to murder of a special needs man over an Xbox.
Man attempted to kill opponent over Counter-Strike match
The trouble all began when Barreaux and another gamer named Mikhael were engaged in a knife fight in Counter-Strike. Barreaux’ s character was killed by Mikhael in the end. Enraged by his loss, Barreaux spent seven months trying to locate Mikhael to exact his revenge. Barreaux found out where Mikhael lived and knocked on his door.
Fight over PlayStation possibly linked to triple homicide
Police suspect a fight over a PlayStation may have played a part in Monday’s events. Reports say Brooks and another individual named Anthony Barron got into a fight in a parking lot. Barron allegedly accused Cawthon of stealing a PlayStation before the fight started. Following the fight Brooks suffered a seizure and was taken to a local hospital.
Portland shooter willed his Playstation 3 to his roommate
An article in the Portland Oregonian reports on the video game habits of Erik Ayala, the suspect in the Saturday (January 24. 2009) shooting that killed two teens and wounded seven others. According to the article, police say Ayala begin a shooting rampage outside an underage club in downtown Portland before turning the gun on himself. He died later from his wounds.
The Oregonian (and numerous other mainstream media outlets) have reported Ayala enjoyed shooting games including Left 4 Dead and Resistance: Fall of Man. In an eerie suicide note, Ayala left his personal possessions including his beloved PlayStation 3 to his roommate.
It will be difficult for police or anyone else to reconcile the kind tone of the suicide note with the actions Ayala is believed to have committed…
MapleStory murderer arrested in Japan
In Miyazaki, Japan, a 43-year-old female MapleStory user was arrested by police for killing her in-game husband’s character after the 33-year-old male user virtually divorced her. The scorned women then logged into his account, using information he had given her during better times, and completely deleted his character as retribution. Talk about a messy break-up.
The man, who lives in Sapporo, Japan, then notified police and the woman was arrested for “inappropriate computer access.” She is currently in police custody in Sapporo. The consequence for her MapleStory murder could be…
Move Over GTA: Petty crime and misdemeanor games (that will never get made)
Not much can make the heart race like doing something you know you’re not supposed to be doing. Perhaps that is why so many games rely on big-time crimes to provide adrenalin-boosting activities – stealing cars, massive property damage and murder.
Although videogames do allow people to partake in ethically questionable activities without actually hurting anyone or anything, not all illegal activities would make good games.
In the spirit of Grand Theft Auto, here are a few theoretical games with illegal activities for names that would simply never sell (which should make at least a few parents happy)…
