IP ownership prevented Respawn Entertainment from signing with THQ

Respawn Entertainment’s founders Jason West and Vincent Zampella are currently in a fierce legal battle with its former publisher Activision. The pair were fired from Infinity Ward last year and are being accused of conspiring with Electronic Arts to damage the Call of Duty franchise beyond repair. Respawn and EA are now in a partnership together, but at one point, THQ had the opportunity to be Respawn’s publisher.

THQ already planning Homefront sequel

Well that was fast wasn’t it? Homefront is not due out until March 2011 and THQ is already planning a sequel. It must have a ton of confidence in this title because sales usually determine if a game will receive a sequel. The Homefront sequel may not have entered development yet. All this follow-up talk may just be plans on paper. Still, THQ’s Danny Bilson has spilled the beans on where the game is taking place.

THQ’s 3DS Saint’s Row game has moved in a new direction

THQ isn’t done with the Saint’s Row franchise by a long shot. The company has already announced plans for a 3DS iteration of Saint’s Row. Saint’s Row: Drive By is believed to be the title of the game. Back in June, we believed Drive By would unlock content in Saint’s Row 3 through the 3DS and Xbox Live. THQ’s Danny Bilson talked more about the title and explained how it isn’t the same game it used to be.

THQ: “There’s no room for average games anymore”

THQ held a press conference today from Montreal. One of the main focuses of the conference was presenting THQ’s upcoming portfolio of games. After showing a sizzle reel featuring titles such as Homefront, Devil’s Third and Red Faction Armageddon, THQ’s Executive Vice President of Core Games Danny Bilson shared a few comments about the new Montreal studio. Simply put, THQ isn’t looking for average games.

THQ doesn’t despise used games

Yesterday (August 23, 2010) we reported on THQ’s creative director Cory Ledesma’s comments on used game sales. Ledesma said THQ didn’t care about consumers who buy used games because the process cheats THQ out of a profit. Ledesma’s words raised a bit of a ruckus online as it appeared THQ wanted to punish customers who buy used. Danny Bilson, THQ’s head of core games, provided damage control against Ledesma statements while speaking to Eurogamer.

THQ prefers civilian misery over movie lot set pieces

THQ is trying something different with its upcoming game Homefront. Homefront tells the story of a world in which the United States has been conquered by North Korea. It’s a story that hits home in more ways than one. The United States and North Korea are not seeing eye to eye on much these days which makes the reality in Homefront much more believable. To convey this message accurately, THQ is relying on emotion rather than the “adrenaline and fear” we tend to see in games such as Modern Warfare.

Red Faction XBLA, PSN game to precede Armageddon

The untitled game will have television show elements that can be downloaded. It will give us a basic idea of everything that leads up to the alien infestation of Mars. THQ plans to release downloadable prequels for its other franchises as well. Bilson said Saint’s Row is another title that can benefit from miniature game before its major release. More information on that will be announced in December.

GDC 2010: New Red Faction title expected in March 2011

Instead of roaming around the surface of a planet, the next Red Faction will mostly take place underground. It will borrow atmospheres from the first couple Red Faction games as well as Red Faction Guerrilla. It will still have destructible environments, but this time destroying things will have a greater effect when done in crowded spaces.
