Alternate Disc-Tractions: The Lord of the Rings animated movie Blu-ray review

This dark and strange animated telling of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings by director Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, American Pop, Wizards, Cool World) has been released to coincide with Blu-ray release of Peter Jackson ‘s live-action Lord of the Rings trilogy.

It’s a bit creepy, has a unique visual style and, being the first official LOTR film, certainly helped to set the tone for future adaptations. You definitelyneed to watch this (with an open mind)…

In the latest re-imagining of Sherlock Holmes, Robert Downey Jr. portrays an arrogant, pompous and socially semi-inept action-oriented detective.

It may very well be in part to Robert Downey Jr.’s much-publicized life experiences or perhaps he has become the ideal actor to portray loveable jackasses but, boy, does it work for him here. Very well, indeed.

Alternate Disc-Tractions: Green Lantern: First Flight Blu-ray (with digital download) review

With the rumors about an upcoming Green Lantern movie that may or may not be delayed yet again, fans of the colorful Corps have to be happy with any on-screen adventure they can get. And this, my fellow poozers, is a pretty decent get.

This animated feature stars Hal Jordan (voiced by Christopher Meloni) and retells an updated version of his super hero origin story as well as Sinestro’s (Victor Garber) final steps to becoming an anti-GL. You’ll see Hal get his ring, a lot of other Green Lanterns from other space sectors, the Guardians of the Universe and Sinestro tossing out streaks of yellow might (along with the Sinestro Corps logo)…
