Sony finally announces a UMD conversion program

Way back when the PSPgo was released, one of the biggest concerns regular PSP owners had involved their old UMD collection. The PSPgo was all digital, so any games that were owned on UMD had to be purchased and downloaded for the PSPgo. The same question was asked of Sony in relation to the Vita. At long last, Sony has a way for Japanese Vita owners to register their old UMDs and obtain a digital copy of their games in return. However, this service is not free.

GameStop will sell download codes for PC games

GameStop is taking another step to ensure it isn’t left behind in this ever-increasing digital world. GameStop will start selling digital copies of PC games in its stores starting in August 23 with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Customers can pre-order Deus Ex: Human Revolution right now using a variety of payment methods.

Steam Daily Deals will tempt your wallet every day

As if it wasn’t hard enough to resist Steam’s insane sales, Valve is going to make sure we visit Steam every day from now on to check on the latest daily deal. Valve announced Steam Daily Deals this week and will offer a big discount on a specific game every day. There will still be other sales going on, but Steam Daily Deals will only be available for 24 hours.

Nintendo won’t sell downloadable 3DS games for $1

There are now at least two major things we know Nintendo won’t do in regards to the 3DS. First, Nintendo isn’t interested in working with “garage developers” who want to create games with no real lasting value. Secondly, Nintendo will not adapt the pricing structure that Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Market currently has. There are countless games for these platforms that are free, or priced at $0.99. The $0.99 price point changed the videogame industry forever, but Nintendo stands firmly against it.

Not all NGP games will get a physical, retail release

I guess Sony learned nothing from the PSPgo. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s president Andrew House just dropped a bomb on potential customers – the games they’re looking for might only be found on the PlayStation Store. House spoke to MCV about the digital and retail issue, inferring that only big-name games, like Uncharted will be available in stores and as a download.

If it’s a smaller NGP game, then it’s up to the publisher…

Sony consoles will not be all digital anytime soon

Sony’s attempt at an all digital format with the PSPgo wasn’t as popular as the UMD based PSP consoles. Sony views the PSPgo as a learning experience as to how much consumers depend of physical media. While the PSPgo is not considered a failure within Sony, it has learned that discs are still the preferred type of media. Therefore Sony’s consoles will not be exclusively digital in the years to come.

Buy a PSPgo, get 10 free games

Anyone who bought a PSPgo after April 1, 2010 will have access to ten free games. Choices include LittleBigPlanet, Grand Theft Auto (no specific title was mentioned) and Gran Turismo. SCE UK sales director Mark Howsen told MCV this offer will not just pertain to older games. Sony is working with other developers to make its games part of this deal.

PlayStation Store Update: Bundles of joyful gaming and digital comics (January 17 to 23, 2009)

This week’s downloadable game is Magic Orbz available this week as a huge bundle pack for $13.99 for the PlayStation 3. This week’s featured PSP downloadable game is actually a free demo called Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, a must-have for fans of the original Lunar Silver Star series originally made for the Sega CD console in 1993 and later a Gameboy version in 2002.

And, of course, ye bigge list of downloadable goodness including lots of comics…
