E3 2010: A few final thoughts

It’s all over folks and has been for a few days now. E3 2010 is behind us and we’re still trying to get back into our normal sleeping routines. I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on all that happened during E3 and give my overall impression of the show.

WiiMote vs. Move vs. Kinect: Comparing control schemes in the three-way battle for motion control

The battle royale for motion control domination is about to get a bit more serious between Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft.

E3 2010 may have been the first time that all three companies were in the same building with fully operational, possibly final versions, of motion control devices we could actually touch – or, as the case with Kinect, not touch – and give a try. By the end of the year (2010) we expect all three to be in gamers’ homes.

While Sony and Microsoft are playing a bit of catch-up with Nintendo, that doesn’t necessarily mean the WiiMote will rule the game room when it comes to the new wave in game control tech.

Here’s a competitive overview of each of the three motion control schemes based on time spent playing with each (for the Move and Kinect, on the E3 2010 floor) noting the benefits and faults of each.

E3 2010: A few things I learned at E3

Even though I’ve been writing about games since the mid-1990s, there’s still plenty to be learned from and about the game industry.

E3 2010 was certainly no exception as even the little things offered insights into those who work on and create all the pixelated goodness we enjoy each day.

While many of these will seem like, “No duh” non-revelations, each involves at least some shade of knowledge that was evidenced at E3. I mean, who thought two Sony booths next to each other would – vehemently – know nothing about each other?

Guess the Marvel Super Hero Squad Online character

At E3, those who visited the Marvel Super Hero Squad Online booth got a free poster and a comic book. It’s not really a comic book but rather a booklet advertising the game made to look like a comic book.

E3 2010: Hands-on with Vindictus

Nexon had three playable MMOs on display at E3 2010, and Gamertell got to test out each one. So far we’ve gone over Dungeon Fighter Online and Dragon Nest, so it’s time to look at what Vindictus had to offer. Like all Nexon games, Vindictus is free to play, and should be available for everyone before the end of 2010.

The Vindictus demo at E3 offered two playable characters to choose from, Lann and Fiona…

E3 2010: Shooting pool with the Hustle Kings and the PlayStation Move controller on PS3

The few minutes I played Hustle Kings in the Sony Booth at E3 2010 were easily the most frustrating of all my gaming endeavors and time spent at the expo.

From the beginning the game seemed to be pretty cool. You stand with the Move controller in hand and wait for the game to calibrate and track your movements. It then super imposes a pool stick in your hand on the screen.

But, when you try to actually shoot, the game goes to Hell.

E3 2010: Hands-on (or hands-off?) with Game Party: In Motion using Kinect for Xbox 360

I put in a bit of time (over two days) with Warner Bros. Interactive’s Game Party: In Motion during E3 2010.

The title, which consists of 16 party style mini games, relies heavily on the Xbox 360′s Kinect full-body motion control system.

I primarily played two games: Rootbeer Tapper (stress on root and bot beer, because this is a family game) and a football tossing game. Both can be played as a single player or two-player game…

E3 2010: Hands-on Harvest Moon: Grand Bazaar

I think we’ve already established that Natsume’s booth at E3 2010 was one of my favorite spots. One of the main reasons was the fact that a new Harvest Moon DS game was on display. Harvest Moon: Grand Bazaar comes out July 27, 2010, so of course it was playable on the show floor.

Harvest Moon: Grand Bazaar takes place in Zephyr Town, which looks like a quaint European village. You choose a hero or heroine, and once again set off to build a thriving farm and family. There are all new townsfolk, with new bachelors and bachelorettes to win over in this new addition, with a new art style for character portraits as well.

Whoever had played the demo before me had begun planting a field of turnips…

E3 2010: Hands-on with Dragon Nest

One of Nexon’s playable MMOs at E3 2010 was Eyedentity Games’ Dragon Nest, a MMORPG with a few FPS elements to it. Nexon published the game in Korea, and is going to be publishing it in North America as well sometime in 2011. While the general public won’t be playing it until next spring, I got to spend a little time with it on one of the computers set up at Nexon’s booth.

The first thing you notice about Dragon Nest are the graphics and presentation. Everything is very polished and flashy. You can tell all the characters and monsters were inspired by JRPGs, because they look like they were plucked straight from an anime or manga series…

The five most memorable moments of E3 2010

A lot of stuff goes down at any E3. However, there are always a few events that are talked about throughout the expo (and they are not necessarily newsworthy).

Here’s a look at five of the more memorable and chatted about happenings at E3 2010
