E3 2011: Sony Online Entertainment gets the job done

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) knows how to make great games, and while the days of their domination of gaming through Everquest are long past, they still put forth a good lineup of fun games for E3 2011:

Sony Online Entertainment back online, outlines compensation plan

As of right now, some PlayStation Network services have been restored in North America. You’re now free to play online, sync Trophies and gawk at your friend’s list. The PlayStation Store isn’t back online yet and we aren’t sure when it will be. Sony Online Entertainment services are also back online. SOE previously announced it had put together a welcome back program to compensate its customers for the difficulties they’ve had to endure, and it has now been put into action.

SOE launches the 17th Everquest expansion

The world of the original Everquest is expanding again. Sony Online Entertainment has released the 17th expansion, House of Thule, today through the SOE Station Store. Can you imagine 17 expansions for an 11 year old game? Crazy. But judging by the list of new inclusions, its obviously a warranted update…

EverQuest Next announced at Sony Online Fan Faire 2010

Sony Online Entertainment held it’s annual Fan Faire 2010 in Las Vegas August 5-8, 2010, and SOE decided it would be the perfect time to reveal some information on the third EverQuest game. EverQuest Next, as it is being referred to at the moment, is going to reimagine the entire series…

Opinion: Fun is ruining my games

So I have a new game, Torchlight, a role-playing game (RPG) in the tradition of Diablo. I’ve been at it a few hours, made level 30, and still haven’t used a healing potion. The monsters, hordes of them, all die with one hit.

This is a perfectly good game, but I’m bored.

Have I turned into a gaming god without knowing it? It would seem so, since I’m playing at the ‘average’ skill level. I guess I could crank the difficulty up to hardcore, but why is the baseline so low…

Sony Online Entertainment opens registration for fan faire 2010

Sony Online Entertainments Fan Faire 2010 is coming to Bally’s in Las Vegas this August 5th through the 8th. Fan Faire is the ultimate event for gamers to play some new games and talk to some of their favorite developers of Sony games.

The best part is, Sony is now offering expanding pricing options on their passes, meaning you can pick the price value that suits you best rather then just paying a flat rate. You can choose from low rates that still allow you to experience all the fun and goodies that the faire has to offer, or you can opt for a higher package and get special perks and special unique items. The passes include Day, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with prices ranging from $39 to $139. Regardless of the pass purchased, you will enjoy this action-packed event filled with contests, live tournaments, cool giveaways, developer panels, exhibits, vendors. And more.

US District Court dismisses disabled gamer’s lawsuit

A lawsuit alleging that Sony denied people with disabilities access to games such as Everquest has been dismissed by a U.S. District Court.

Judge Percy Anderson ruled that video games are not a place of public accommodation and that treating games as such would create liability for numerous manufacturers.

EverQuest’s 16th expansion, Underfoot, is out

There are now 16 EverQuest expansions. 16! And I bet everyone was thinking that The Sims 2 was the king of costly and possibly frivilous add-ons. Sony released EverQuest Underfoot today, December 15, 2009. Underfoot is available as a $39.99 download only at the official EverQuest site.

Underfoot will include the expansions standards, which means there will be new quests, events, items, equipment, spells, recipes and abilities to learn. There are over 12 new locations added to EverQuest with this expansion, like Fungal Forest and Brell’s Temple, which you can go into alone, with a group or in raids. An achievement system is also added in, which allows both you and other players to show off how awesome you are. The tracking system has been improved, making it easier to hunt down friends, enemies and NPCs. There have also been a number of new and better tradeskilling equipment and items added in.

This is one of the cases where a download only release is probably for the best…

Help support Child’s Play by purchasing Everquest in-game items

Sony wants to help Child’s Play earn some money, so they’re organizing a special fundrasing drive that only only raises money so hospitalized children will have toys, games and other niceties while they’re receiving treatment, but also helps get the word out about Station Cash in EverQuest and EverQuest II. If you purchase a special Child’s Play item through either the EverQuest or EverQuest II online marketplace with Station Cash, then Sony will donate $10 to Child’s Play.

The fundraiser begins January 20, 2009 and lasts for one month after that. At the moment, both Station.com and the official Child’s Play site don’t have much information on the affair…
