Analysis: The good and the bad of open world games
We’ve seen our fair share of open world games. They do feel pretty fulfilling and fun ideas for gaming. After all, who doesn’t want to try to scale the highest mountains in the game world or explore the unmade paths? However, with the full freedom that open worlds give us, there are games that do things fairly well and there are games that probably should’ve used far more work before being released…

America lost the war, and I love it
For generations, America has been seen as one of the biggest superpowers in the world. We have the strongest military, the most wealth and have been a beacon of hope for many people immigrating onto our shores. In the videogame world, America has been the victor in war or seen as the world’s last hope. But now that is changing. Recent and future games present the United States as defeated, in disarray and at the mercy of another nation. It’s a change of pace that I for one, greatly enjoy.
2K Marin re-imagining X-COM franchise
If you have been dying to get your hands on yet another game from an earlier era brought forth to the forefront of the current generation, 2K Marin has just the game for you: X-COM.
If Bethesda’s version of Fallout has taught this industry anything, it’s that isometric games being brought to the first-person viewpoint are automatic gold.
That’s what we learned from that, right?
Fallout 3 downloadable content available late August 2009, GOTY edition may be coming October
War never changes, as the narrator in Fallout 3 reminds players. But the landscape of the game’s Capitol Wasteland and surrounding areas is constantly changing thanks to the expansion packs Bethesda regularly releases.
Bethesda has confirmed the inevitable compilation of the game’s latest downloadable content will hit retailers August 25, 2009. The game’s second DLC compilation (The Pitt and Operation Anchorage were part of a May combo pack) will include Point Lookout and Broken Steel at $20 for both Xbox 360 and PC.
Extremely patient gamers may want to wait until October 13, 2009, when the…
Don’t expect the PS3 Fallout 3 DLC until September ’09
Bad news for PlayStation 3 owners of Fallout 3. That downloadable content that you thought was going to be available in June, 2009, isn’t. Of course, you probably already realized that by now, given that it’s July already. The thing is, you’re going to have to wait quite a bit longer to play “Operation: Anchorage,” “The Pitt,” “Broken Steel,” “Point Lookout” and “Mothership Zeta.” Think September, 2009. Well, technically October, 2009, since the official PlayStation.Blog says the first DLC will be out at September’s end.
In order to make up for the massive delay, the release schedule is going to be altered. “Broken Steel”, which continues the main story, raises the level cap and adds in new enemies, will be released first…
Bethesda’s parent company purchases id Software
This one came out of nowhere – ZeniMax, the parent company of Fallout 3 and Oblivion developer Bethesda, has just announced its acquisition of id Software (best known for the Doom and Quake franchises). According to a report at Gamasutra, Bethesda will publish all of id’s currently unsigned projects (EA already has the upcoming Rage), and the move is being seen as the company really stepping up it’s publishing side.
Bethesda discusses Fallout 3 Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta DLC
On May 20, 2009 Bethesda announced two additional episodes to the Fallout 3 universe. “Point Lookout” will be released first on June 23, 2009 for Xbox 360 and PC for 800 MS points ($10) and “Mothership Zeta” is coming out in July, 2009 for Xbox and PC. The PS3 versions will be available later in the year. During an interview with The Hachiko, Joel Burgess, the lead designer of “Point Lookout,” and Jeff Gardiner, lead producer of Fallout 3 DLC, answered some questions, giving details on both upcoming downloads.
“Point Lookout” takes place in the rural Point Lookout, MD. They chose this location because it has a very interesting history, including rumors of a haunted lighthouse, and was the place where 50,000 Confederate prisoners were held during the Civil War. In Fallout 3, Point Lookout wasn’t directly hit by the bombs, but the swampy landscape was affected by it immensely…
