The first Project AM2R demo is out

What’s an AM2R? Glad you asked! It’s actually what DoctorM64 refers to the Another Metroid 2 Remake project as. Which makes sense, as it’s much easier to say. Not that it matters after all, as that’s just a temporary name for this fan project which takes a fresh look at the Game Boy Metroid 2 classic with fresh graphics and a little bit of new content.

Right now, AM2R is still in the early stages. However, substantial progress has been made and there’s even something pretty awesome to see. There’s a trailer to watch an a demo to download…

GLaDOSiri is the future

Some of the best internet videos come from creative minds with free time on their hands. Jeff Heimbuch is one of those minds, and he has come up with what is and will probably always be the best take on Apple’s iPhone 4S Siri function. That’s because Heimbuch is a fan of Portal 2, and saw how Siri could be improved by adding in a little GLaDOS.

The result is a slight alteration of the Apple Siri commercial. It’s mostly the same video you all remember from Apple’s big meeting this week, but only mostly. A very important detail has been changed, turning a simple virtual assistant into the best virtual assistant ever…

Back to the Future as seen in LittleBigPlanet 2

I always knew LittleBigPlanet was capable of producing some amazing levels, but I have not heard of, or seen any level better than this one. One incredibly crafty individual by the name of Rigzz has recreated the classic clock tower scene from Back to the Future in LittleBigPlanet 2. It’s not shot for shot, but darn it if it doesn’t fill my heart with glee.

Retrorocket is released on the DS homebrew scene

Fans of shooting games and DS homebrew should start rejoicing right around now. They should probably start thanking Asbjørn Djupdal, Morten Hartmann and Kyrre Glette as well, since efforts from the three created Retrorocket. Djupdal and Hartmann were inspired by Thrust (Atari 2600) and TurboRaketti II (Amiga), and decided that those games belonged on the DS, so they set to work on a pretty homebrew application.

Retrorocket offers more than some commercial games. All of the Thrust levels and TurboRaketti II maps are available for play. Plus there is a RTS strategy mode where you can enhance your shop by collecting items and multiplayer collection games. Multiplayer games can even carried out over local WiFi as well. Also Glette assisted the duo by programming in map autogeneration.

Let GLaGPS tell you where to go

Portal fans may remember that GLaDOS dictated directions to the player at all times. GLaDOS was, of course, evil and misleading, but the haunting voice was somewhat mesmerizing. You can now have GLaDOS order you around in your daily life as well, thanks to the GLaGPS created by Ryan VanMiddlesworth. Where GLaDOS stands for Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System, GLaGPS stands for Genetic Lifeform and Global Positioning System.

GLaGPS is a fan project, and not endorsed by Valve, the makers of Portal, but I’m sure they’d find it pretty darn cool. The voice pack only works with the Garmin Nuvi GPS so far, though VanMiddlesworth is also working on a TomTom version.

A few of our favorite Caramelldansen videos

If you’re a YouTube fan, chances are you’ve encountered the Caramelldansen phenomenon, a strange, 30~120 second video that shows cartoon-style versions of popular anime, cartoon or video game characters doing a bunny-wiggle dance to the hyper song “Caramelldansen.” After sitting through the entire video, you’ll be a bit stunned, perhaps wondering what is going on. Yes, you’ve stumbled upon an outdated meme.

Since then, fans have decided to dance the “Caramelldansen” dance, dragging their favorite characters with them. No series is safe, no character too unlikely, to become…

Video game cocktails by Scrollbar

The IT University of Copenhagen Scrollbar student group runs a weekly bar every Friday called Fredagbar. Since the college has a special program devoted to Media Technology and Games, it only makes sense that quite a few students are video games fans. Two of the group’s recent Fredagbars involved popular video game franchises, Super Mario (February 15, 2008) and Final Fantasy (May 9, 2008), and for each series custom cocktails were created.

Thankfully, the good students of Scrollbar realized that gaming fans around the world would be interested in the various concoctions created, Webpages were created for each event, providing a few pictures showing the Fredagbar bar area, guests (many dressed as Mario or FF characters) and drinks as well as the drinks’ recipes – complete with suggested prices. Its really helpful, as others may want to try and duplicate the experience.

“Kidnap the Sandy Claws” WOW music video

Its a bit late for Christmas themed posts, but this World of Warcraft fan-made music video is so good it must be shared. It features characters in the game dressed as Santa, Jack, Oogie Boogie, Lock, Shock and Barrel from The Nightmare Before Christmas and it has them re-enacting the “Kidnap the Sandy Claws” segment of the movie. It is honestly one of the best fan-made music videos I have ever seen.
