Final Fantasy XIV will stop being free on January 6

Way back in 2010, Square Enix realized Final Fantasy XIV was a complete bomb. Square Enix restructured the development team, apologized constantly for the game’s quality and made it free to play until it could churn out a quality product that was actually worth the money. In October of this year, Square Enix announced it was nearly done with FFXIV version 2.0 and would begin charging for the game by December. Well, that’s not going to happen. FFXIV will remain free for one more month. On January 6, 2012, paid subscriptions for FFXIV will return.

Final Fantasy XIV, XI and PlayOnline servers return on March 25

Final Fantasy XIV Following the disaster in Japan, Square Enix decided to shut down servers for Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy XI and PlayOnline to conserve the country’s power supplies. Square Enix didn’t initially know when the servers would be brought back online, but a date was set earlier today. Expect to jump back into the MMO action on March 25, 2011.

As we all know, Japan was hit with a massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake last week, followed by a tsunami. Well over a 100 aftershocks continued to be felt in the days that followed. The world is pitching in to assist in the relief efforts, and the power companies in Japan have decided to take measures to conserve power. That’s why the servers that govern Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy XI and PlayOnline have been temporarily suspended.

Final Fantasy XIV director vows to fix game without starting from stratch

Final Fantasy XIV has seriously damaged Square Enix. The PC MMO was released last year with overwhelmingly disappointing results. After tons of negative feedback from the press and customers alike, Square Enix decided to make suspend monthly subscription costs for FFXIV until all the problems are sorted out. Most of the original development team stepped down while new members work to make things right. FFXIV‘s new director/producer Naoki Yoshida explained to Famitsu what his team plans on fixing.

Square Enix decreases its net income forecast by 91.7%

Square Enix has definitely seen better days. The company is doing so bad right now, it now predicts a 91.7% decrease in net income for its fiscal year which will end on March 31, 2011. Square Enix initially expected to make 12 billion yen ($142 million), but now only expects 1 billion yen ($11.9 million) in its current fiscal year. The culprits behind this massive slide are Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Final Fantasy XIV.
