Since it’s April Fools’ Day, we all have to tread more carefully on the Internet lest we fall for someone’s shenanigans. Therefore, at first glance it sounds mighty suspicious that Telltale would out of the blue offer the first episode of Back to the Future for free today, of all days. But have no fear! Telltale is totally serious about this offer.

G5 Entertainment is celebrating the most romantic holiday of the year by giving away Mushroom Age, for the IPhone and IPad, for free this Valentine’s Day, February 14th 2011.

Mushroom Age is a hidden item adventure game that involves lots of time travel. Play as Vera, a woman looking for her husband who is lost somewhere in time. Visit dinosaurs, cavemen, historical figures like Socrates and Nostradamus, and even robots from the future.

It’s rare when you can actually apply the “you get what you pay for” thought to something cheap and have it mean something. It usually means that you went for the lowest price or bidder and the workmanship will likely be pretty shoddy. Still, sometimes you find something that is cheap or, in this case, free and it’s actually a pretty strong product.

That is what Alien Swarm is. It’s a lot of software that works pretty well for the price of nothing. Hurray! Time to delve deeper…

Celebrating Adam Malysz’s silver medal in Men’s Ski Jumping, Polish developer Vivid Game’s Boozle is “free as long as the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics last” (according to a press release sent February 19, 2010). The 2010 Winter Olympics taking place in Vancouver, Canada, will officially end February 28, 2010.

Boozle is a match-3 style game where you have to try and balance between clearing food versus beverages. Consume too much on one side or the other and your avatar unleashes the contents of his stomach upon your screen…

For 24 hours, developer DotEmu is giving away Nicky Boom 2 for iPhone and iPod Touch. That’s right, zero dollars. Free ninety-nine.

The game is available through the Apple App Store (aka iTunes) today (February 17, 2010) only. Although the company press release did not indicate a specific time period other than “today,” assume it ends at midnight (although the time zone is still a guess). The normally sells for $2.99.

I played for a few minutes and it’s essentially a 2D platformer in the mood of various ’80s games. You shoot little green bullets at opponents, jump only tiny platforms, duck into passages and climb ladders to escape various opponents.

The retail version of the massive multiplayer online real time strategy (MMORTS) title SAGA is now available for free for a limited time at FileFront. The site will be giving away 50,000 retail keys with downloads of the game between today (May 7, 2008) and May 11, 2008. The full version of the game normally costs $19.95, and you don’t have to pay a monthly fee to continue enjoying retail-only extras. It’s a pretty good deal, considering SAGA came out March 4, 2008.

If you don’t get to FileFront in time to get a free retail version of SAGA, then don’t worry. You can still enjoy the free version of SAGA, which can be downloaded at the official website. The differences are somewhat substantial – the retail version allows players to spy on each other, trade with other users, form guilds and engage in combat with other players.
