Shadow of the Colossus film in the works
Every advocate for games-as-art just got some pretty interesting (and potentially very bad) news – it appears that the ethereal, unconventional Shadow of the Colossus is going to be made into a movie. Ben Fritz of The Cut Scene reported that the Sony-owned property is set to receive the Hollywood treatment via Sony Pictures and producer Kevin Misher (known for The Interpeter).
Gamertell Review: Max Payne the movie
Title: Max PayneRelease Date: October 17, 2008Company: 20th Century FoxRating: PG-13Length 100 minutesPros: The storyline is close to the storyline of the game, being adapted in a couple of places so to not push away people who weren’t interested in the game. It appeals to the people who haven’t played the game and makes them interested in at least giving the game a shot. The special effects are incredible.Cons: Realism is all over the place. Some of the camera work is distracting. When it’s supposed to be subdued to goes too big and when it’s supposed to be big it becomes subdued. The present-tense scene-setting is one massive continuity error.Overall Score: One thumb up and one sideways, 80/100, B-, *** out of five.
For those who actually went to see Max Payne in the theaters, it was met with mixed reactions. Some people thought it was great and some people thought it was a good movie, just not a good Max Payne movie. There were also people who thought that it was simply horrible. Then there were the people like me who thought it was adequate. What it did right was dead on and what it did wrong were just things that could use a lot of improvement…
Hitman misses the mark
The latest in a long line of videogame movie turkeys, Hitman has been getting reamed left and right by film critics. The Hollywood reporter recently posted an article listing its many flaws; from its emotionless main character (agent 47, played by Timothy Olyphant), to its clichéd plot to lame direction. Uwe Boll secures film rights to Legend: Hand of God
Uwe Boll is up to his old tricks again although, technically, this is a new trick. The oft-maligned director of terrible video game films has actually procured the rights to a game that isn’t out yet: PC action-RPG Legend: Hand of God. The game is due for a 2008 release, with a tentative early 2009 date set for shooting Boll’s likely skewering of the subject material.
There’s a certain level of amusement in all the franchise whoring going around these days, and Boll is certainly the most prolific offender…
Uwe Boll’s Tunnel Rats to get a game adaptation
In a move that will have gamers everywhere shaking their collective heads with the sheer irony of it all, an Uwe Boll film will be made into a videogame. The movie in question is Tunnel Rats, a Vietnam War period piece that highlights the senselessness and brutality of war. The game will be a dark and gritty FPS, developed by Replay Studios and will feature the likenesses of the film’s stars Michael Pare, Nate Parker, Brandon Fobbs and Erik Eidem.
Tunnel Rats will be released on the Xbox 360 and PC and, if it’s successful, Boll has said that he’d like to “keep going with other game ideas.” Consider yourself warned…
